The Baltimore Orioles gave fans something to actually cheer about last night when they staged a team record 10-run comeback over American League East leading Boston Redsox. The Orioles beat the Red Sox 11-10 after scoring five runs in both the seventh and eighth innings in last night's game. If you missed the action, here's the recap:
Trailing 10-1 in the seventh, O's Luke Scott doubled to move Nolan Reimold to third and drive in Aubrey Huff. Pinch hitter Oscar Salazar hit a three-run homer to tighten the deficit 11-5. Felix Pie gave the O's their fifth run of the seventh inning by driving in Robert Andino.
Matt Weiters got the run party started in the eight by driving in Reimold with a single, moving Scott to third and Salazar to second. Scott then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ty Wigginton as Salazar moved to third. Brian Roberts singled down the third base line, scoring Salazar and moving Weiters to second. The Orioles took the 11-10 lead after Nick Markakis doubled to deep center field, scoring Roberts and Jeremy Guthrie.
What a night for Orioles fans. It will probably be one of the best games of the year for Baltimore. The truth of the matter is that despite the great showing last night, the O's are 35-42 and sitting 12 games behind the Red Sox, who are at the top of the division. That isn't going to cut it when the Red Sox, Yankees and Devil Rays are in the same division. Even the other team, the Toronto Blue Jays are doing better than the Orioles this year as they possess a respectable 41-38 record.
While the Orioles made a step in the right direction last night, it will be interesting if they can keep the momentum going for the remainder of the campaign. They proved they can score runs, but the pitching needs to step up a little bit more because giving up 10 runs is not the way you win games. With that kind of effort on the mound, the O's will be sitting in the cellar for the rest of the season.
