Former University of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early this morning. It is the third time that Gillispie, 50, has been arrested on alcohol-related driving charges. However, in one case the charge was dismissed and in the other he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, reckless driving.
Gillispie went 40-27 in two seasons with the Wildcats, including a 22-14 mark last season that tied for the second-most losses in the program's 106-year history. He was fired in March and replaced by former University of Memphis coach John Calipari.
It appears that it is time to take Gillispie's license away. It is obvious that Gillispie can't control himself when it comes to drinking and driving, so why is he allowed to get behind the wheel of a car? This is another example of a coach not doing the right things. I understand that coaches are human just like the rest of us, but parents trust coaches to help guide their kids. They trust them to lead by example and be solid role models. They should be held at the highest possible standards. So looking back at it, was it really too difficult to call a taxi or wait a little while for the alcohol to wear off before getting behind the wheel of a car?
