Crompton Officially Named Vols Starter For Week 1

University of Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin officially announced what everybody that had a brain knew - Jonathon Crompton will be Vols starting quarterback for week one against Western Kentucky.

In what appeared to be a close battle between the senior Crompton and junior Nick Stephens, it was Crompton that gets the early nod. Crompton and Stephens split the starting duties last season, and they both struggled worst than I've ever seen any quarterbacks struggle. They combined to throw only eight touchdown passes with eight interceptions the entire season.

Since Kiffin took over the throne as head football coach, both Crompton and Stephens were given plenty of opportunities to win over the starting job. Unfortunately for Stephens, an offseason wrist injury gave Crompton an advantage and Stephens never caught up.

Only time will tell if Crompton will relish the opportunity because if he doesn't prove that he is a legit quarterback early on this season, he might never get the opportunity to play again.

  1. Compton has a cannon for an arm but unfortunately lacks most of the mental faculties that are required to compete at this level. I hope he proves me wrong and has an outstanding year. I will reserve any further judgement until after the Florida game. Go Vols...

  2. It was a no-brainer of a choice between the two.

  3. Crompton will most likely be on a short leash. If he plays like he did last year, there is no way that Kiffin will sit patiently and watch his offense self destruct every drive.

  4. He has nobody to throw to and now his starting center is hurt. It isn't looking so good for Crompty.
