SAN DIEGO COUNTY CREDIT UNION
POINSETTIA BOWL
No. 23 Utah at California
8:00 p.m. ET ESPN
If you would have told me before the season started that Utah and Cal would be playing in a bowl game against each other, I would have thought it would have been a better bowl game than the Poinsettia Bowl. I think it’s fair to say that both No. 23 Utah and unranked Cal are pretty disappointed with the way the season ended up.
Utah (9-3), who has won eight straight bowl games, finished the year third in the Mountain West, behind TCU and BYU. Cal (8-4) on the other hand finished fifth in the Pac-10.
Cal lost their top offensive weapon and arguably one of the top running backs in the nation when junior Jahvid Best took a hell of a fall while jumping over defenders in the end zone Nov. 7. He suffered a concussion and hasn’t played since then, and he won’t play in the bowl game either. In his absence, sophomore Shane Vereen filled in nicely by rushing for 444 yards and four touchdowns in the last three games. The Golden Bears will need a huge game from him in the one if they want to have a chance.
The Utes will rely heavily on running back Eddie Wide. The junior led the Mountain West with 1,032 yards and 12 touchdowns.
