Texas Tech Fires Mike Leach

Just as Mike Leach expected, he has been fired by Texas Tech just short of its bowl game against Michigan State. So, it looks like the pirate will not be coaching the Red Raiders after all.

Leach's lawyer was handed a termination letter effective immediately stemming from allegations from sophomore receiver Adam James, who accused Leach of confining him to small, dark spaces two times during practice after the player was diagnosed with a concussion. James is the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James, which in all likeliness made this story much bigger than it should have been.

What makes this story interesting is that Leach was due to receive a $800,000 bonus if he was still the team's head coach at year's end. It was part of the agreement Leach and the school made when he signed a five year, $12 million deal earlier this season. Leach will be owed $400,000 for each remaining year on the contract.

Leach was a hot commodity a year ago for several coaching vacancies across the country after he led Tech to a school best 11-2 record. There is no denying his ability to create a hell of a spread offensive attack, but his off-the-wall personality was always a question mark. It looks like his personality finally got the best of him.
