Saturday Sports Briefs
Former New England Patriots Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel are heading to Kansas City in exchange for the 34th overall pick in this year's NFL Draft. This is a great deal for Kansas City, who is getting a quarterback that could emerge into a star. Vrabel adds experience and leadership to a young Chiefs defense. For Patriots fans, this looks like a losing situation.
Brian Dawkins - The former Philadelphia Eagles safety has signed a five year $17 million contract with the Denver Broncos. Dawkins spent his entire career with the Eagles and it seemed like he would retire in Philadelphia. Maybe this is an indication that Dawkins is not happy with the progress the Eagles have made the past couple of years.
Derrick Dockery - The guard is headed back to the Washington Redskins after being cut by the Bills last week. Dockery signed a five year $26 million dollar contract to return to the team that drafted him in 2003. This adds depth to the Skins O-Line and appears to be a win-win for both sides.
New York Jets - After picking up free agent linebacker Bart Scott last week, the Jets and Eagles have reportedly agreed to terms to send cornerback Lito Shepherd to the Jets in exchange for a fifth round draft pick this year and a conditional 2010 draft pick. Good corners are hard to come by and Shepherd can get the job done. Two draft picks may seem like a steep price, but I actually think this is a good deal for the Jets, who needed to fill the cornerback position opposite Darrelle Revis. The Jets have also reportedly re-signed OG Brandon Moore to a four-year, $16 million deal.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh - After visiting Seattle last week and coming out of there without a deal, the receiver is visiting the Minnesota Vikings today. Housh made it known that he would like to play for the Eagles next season, but the feeling might not be mutual. At the moment it looks like its a strong possibility for Housh to return to the Bengals, unless the Vikings can lock him up. It's widely believed the Bengals, Vikings and Seahawks are the leading candidates for Housh's services next season.
Jon Kitna - The former Lions quarterback was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed draft pick. Kitna isn't a bad guy to have on your team, and a backup role seems perfect for Kitna at this point in his career.
In what is a non-surprise to Knox Animal, the Washington Redskins locked up Albert Haynesworth on a seven-year $100 million contract with a guaranteed $41 million. The deal could exceed $115 million if all incentives are met.
