Brett Favre Is Tough

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre admitted that he thinks he has a cracked rib. The 39-year old said that he has trouble breathing, but he isn't expected to miss any time because of this. There has been no official diagnosis, but because Favre is Favre, he can also be a doctor when he wants.

Favre is slated to play the entire first half of the Vikings final pre-season game against the Houston Texans and isn't listed on Minnesota's injury report. The best part about the whole thing is that the three-time MVP doesn't plan on wearing any special padding to protect the injury.

Favre is such an old school tough guy that a little broken rib isn't going to slow him down. I bet Favre will have no problems getting the respect of his entire team now that he admittedly is going to play a pre-season game through an injury. Tavaris Jackson stands no chance at beating out Favre for playing time this season.

Kiffin Wasn't Kidding: Vols Freshman Will Play Alot

When University of Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin hit the recruiting trail, he told the incoming class that they would get plenty of playing time if they proved themselves in camp. When the first year coach released the initial depth chart for the season, we all realized he wasn't kidding.

After years and years of seniority rules on the Vols, a breath of fresh air has hit the football team. The best players will actually be on the field for the Vols no matter what class they are in. It's a brilliant concept that might just work for the Vols as they try to avenge a poor 5-7 campaign from a year ago.

Let's start with the running backs. Everybody has heard the hype of the nation's number one running back Bryce Brown. He will be the legit number two guy behind senior Montario Hardesty. Brown will play a lot and has routinely been working with the first team offense. The forgotten man of the bunch is freshman David Oku. He will most likely be the third guy in the mix along with sophomore Tauren Poole. Oku is shifty and has had a great camp. He will get his chances and look for him to make the most of those opportunities.

At receiver, freshman Nu'Keese Richardson is slated to start opposite senior Quentin Hancock. Due to injuries not only will Richardson be counted on to step up, other freshman Marsalis Teague and Zach Rogers will also get the chance to show what they can do as they will be thrown into the mix at various occasions.

Flipping to the other side of the ball, several freshman will have their chance to play, especially at the linebacker position. Freshman Greg King is the backup at weak side linebacker behind senior starter Lamarcus Thompson. Freshman Herman Lathers and Nigel Mitchell-Thornton are behind senior starter Nick Reveiz at middle linebacker. Don't forget about heralded freshman Jerod Askew, who is behind senior Rico McCoy and junior Savion Frazier at strong side linebacker.

In the secondary, freshman Janzen Jackson is slated as the starter at free safety along with junior Dennis Rogan. Jackson will get plenty of playing time this season and could force Rogan to move back to corner depending on how the season goes. Freshman Darren Myles is in a battle with sophomore Prentiss Wagner to become Eric Berry's backup at strong safety. There won't be much playing time there, but its not a bad spot to be in considering Berry is one of the best to ever play the position is college. Freshman Mike Edwards has been making strides at the cornerback position and he will get some nickel back opportunities for sure.

In the special teams return game, expect Oku and Richardson to get some opportunities along with Rogan.

This is exciting for Vols fans as the freshman from this class will get some big time playing time as freshman. It is proof that the times are changing for Tennessee football.

What's In Theaters August 28?

This is a great week for movies. Highlighted by Taking Woodstock and the newest addition to the always humorous Final Destination series, this is a good week to head to the movies.

Taking Woodstock

A man working at his parents' motel in the Catskills inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969. This movie is obviously going to interest me and this is my pick for the week. If you like music and the history of music and festivals - this is a must see movie.

Big Fan

Paul Aufiero, a hardcore New York Giants football fan, struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his favorite player. Starring Patton Oswalt and Michael Rapaport, this movie should be pretty funny. This will be a movie that I will end up seeing and probably enjoy a lot.

H2: Halloween 2

Laurie Strode struggles to come to terms with her brother Michael's deadly return to Haddonfield, Illinois; meanwhile, Michael prepares for another reunion with his sister. This movie picks up at the exact moment the first movie stopped and follows the aftermath of Michael's murderous rampage through the eyes of Laurie. I am convinced that these Halloween movies will never end. Frankly, I don't even think they are good. I don't have any interest in seeing it, but people will flock to theaters to watch it because they always do.

The Final Destination

You all know the story by now, after a teen's premonition of a deadly race-car crash helps saves the lives of his peers, death sets out to collect those who evaded their end. These movies are all the same and they are all extremely hilarious, so expect the fourth installment to this series to be about the same. The most outrageous things kill people, making it a comedy-horror pretty much. I'll end up seeing it, just not for a while.

The Open Road

In what could be an under the radar good movie of the week, The Open Road centers on the adult son of a baseball legend who, together with his girlfriend, embarks on a road trip with his estranged father. Justin Timberlake and Jeff Bridges star to make this one of the more intriguing movie releases this week.

Freshman Barkley Named USC Starting Quarterback Over Corp

In a somewhat of a surprise move, true freshman Matt Barkley has been named the starting quarterback for the University of Southern California.

USC coach Pete Carroll unexpectedly announced his decision Thursday, several hours before practice and two days before USC's mock game.

Sophomore Aaron Corp was named the Trojans' starter after spring practice, but then missed two weeks of workouts after breaking a small bone below his left knee August 10. Barkley took advantage of the opportunity and has been playing lights out ever since - prompting the decision to go with the freshman.

That is the risk you take when you go to a powerhouse of a school with a deep depth chart at every position. If you get hurt, you risk losing your job and that is exactly what happened here. This however could be interesting for other USC players and future commitments. If Barkley is the starter this year, he will be the starter for three more years, or two if he opts to go pro after his junior season. If that is the case then to-be freshman quarterback Jesse Scroggins has a long time to wait before he sees the playing field. Does this mean that the Tennessee Vols or Florida Gators still have a shot at Scroggins? Only time will tell.

Billy Gillispie Likes Drinking and Driving

Former University of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early this morning.

It is the third time that Gillispie, 50, has been arrested on alcohol-related driving charges. However, in one case the charge was dismissed and in the other he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, reckless driving.

Gillispie went 40-27 in two seasons with the Wildcats, including a 22-14 mark last season that tied for the second-most losses in the program's 106-year history. He was fired in March and replaced by former University of Memphis coach John Calipari.

It appears that it is time to take Gillispie's license away. It is obvious that Gillispie can't control himself when it comes to drinking and driving, so why is he allowed to get behind the wheel of a car? This is another example of a coach not doing the right things. I understand that coaches are human just like the rest of us, but parents trust coaches to help guide their kids. They trust them to lead by example and be solid role models. They should be held at the highest possible standards. So looking back at it, was it really too difficult to call a taxi or wait a little while for the alcohol to wear off before getting behind the wheel of a car?

Vols Brown Not In Trouble Anymore

University of Tennessee heralded freshman running back Bryce Brown has been cleared by the NCAA of any wrongdoing and will not serve any suspension or be required to pay any restitution for money raised for Brown to attend college campuses while in high school.

The Vols appealed the initial NCAA ruling on the case which had fallen under the NCAA's 30 percent rule, which would have required Brown to miss the first four games and repay most of or all the money that was spent while attending the college campuses. However, after further investigation, the NCAA cleared Brown from any wrongdoing and he will be allowed to continue on without any penalty.

So basically Brown didn't know anything about where the money came from or how he was visiting these colleges. I guess when you are a great high school running back, you think you get to go places for free and don't spend any of your own money. People flock to you and give you free things, it's all the perk of being the number one rated high school prospect.

It's good news that Brown escaped this investigation without any penalty at all, especially since the running game will be heavily counted on this season - especially in the early going. With three receivers injured, the Vols will be forced to pound the ball and having Brown in the lineup is a definite plus.

Bob Dylan To Release Christmas Album For Charity

Quite possibly the greatest song writer in music history, Bob Dylan, is set to release a Christmas album on October 13 and will donate all his U.S. royalties from album sales to the charity group Feeding America.

There were rumblings about a possible Christmas album from Dylan a few months back, but nothing has been confirmed until now. The album, "Christmas in the Heart", will feature such tracks as Little Drummer Boy, Winter Wonderland, Here Comes Santa Claus and many other classic Holiday favorites.

The only problem that I see with the album is that Bob Dylan is singing songs that he did not write. Not only is Dylan's main strength not being showcased with this album, listeners have to endure the pain of Dylan belting out classics with his raspy out of tune sound. However, it's for a good cause, so I support it.

Michael Jackson Is Alive?

We all knew that the Michael Jackson is alive speculations were going to come sometime and frankly I am surprised that it took this long for anything to come to light. Everybody saw the news that Michael Jackson was dead and we all saw footage from the memorial service. However, somebody - whoever recorded this video sure wants you to believe that the King of Pop is still alive.

So is that really him in the video? Who knows...

Jets Name Mark Sanchez Starting Quarterback

The New York Jets have officially named rookie Mark Sanchez the starting quarterback for the Week 1 opener against Houston on September 13.

Sanchez, the No. 5 overall pick out of USC, was in a tight battle with Kellen Clemens, but all signs were pointing toward Sanchez as being the Jets starter for opening week. Sanchez and Clemens have both had their ups and downs this pre-season, but the upside for Sanchez is clearly higher than Clemens.

Sanchez was 6-of-12 in two preseason games, with one touchdown pass and one interception.
Clemens, in his fourth season out of Oregon, is 9-of-14 for 84 yards in the preseason. He also has one touchdown and one pick.

The future is now for the Jets, and this was a no-brainer decision for the Jets to make. Sanchez is clearly more talented than Clemens. While, its always seen as throwing the rookie to the fire when they start the season in the spotlight, Sanchez can handle to pressure of being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Having played his college ball at USC, he is use to the spotlight. I look forward to seeing Sanchez play this season. He will undoubtedly make some mistakes on the field, but the upside is well worth the risk of having him start the season as the number one guy in New York.

Vols McNeil To Have Knee Surgery, Season in Doubt

University of Tennessee center Josh McNeil initially has been banged up his whole career. However, this is one injury the senior cannot shake. Head coach Lane Kiffin confirmed after today's practice that McNeil will undergo arthroscopic surgery for his injured knee Wednesday morning to determine the extent of the injury.

This could be a tremendous blow for the Vols as McNeil has been an ironman on the field, starting 35 games for the Vols - much of the time while battling injuries.

While a simple MRI would normally be done to determine the extent of the injury, McNeil's knees are too badly banged up to get anything out of an MRI, a knoxnews.com report said.

While we await word of the extent of the injury, freshman Cody Sullins will take over center duties for the Vols offense. McNeil and Sullins were in a tight battle for the starting job since Kiffin's arrival. Even though McNeil would have won the job, Sullins gave the veteran McNeil a run for his money. However, any time you go from a senior to a freshman, there is going to be a learning curve to overcome. With the inconsistent quarterback play, this could prove to be a bigger loss than the Vols think.

Crompton Officially Named Vols Starter For Week 1

University of Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin officially announced what everybody that had a brain knew - Jonathon Crompton will be Vols starting quarterback for week one against Western Kentucky.

In what appeared to be a close battle between the senior Crompton and junior Nick Stephens, it was Crompton that gets the early nod. Crompton and Stephens split the starting duties last season, and they both struggled worst than I've ever seen any quarterbacks struggle. They combined to throw only eight touchdown passes with eight interceptions the entire season.

Since Kiffin took over the throne as head football coach, both Crompton and Stephens were given plenty of opportunities to win over the starting job. Unfortunately for Stephens, an offseason wrist injury gave Crompton an advantage and Stephens never caught up.

Only time will tell if Crompton will relish the opportunity because if he doesn't prove that he is a legit quarterback early on this season, he might never get the opportunity to play again.

Austin City Limits add Yeah Yeah Yeahs

When the Beastie Boys had to back out of their scheduled appearance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival Friday, October 2, the rumors and hopefuls for who would replace the Beastie's ran rampant.

Now, according to aclmusic.com, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the band slated to fill in. Raphael Saadiq and Ben Sollee have also been added to the sold-out festival that is scheduled to take place Oct. 2-4.

I know many people like the Yeah Yeah Yeah's but for them to replace the Beastie Boys in what is a co-headliner spot to Kings of Leon doesn't quite fit. It was rumored that YYY would be the replacement as soon as news broke of the Beastie's cancellation, but I was hoping for a little bit stronger of an act for that time slot. However, it doesn't affect me too much as I will be over watching Kings of Leon anyway.

Vols Jones Hurts Ankle, Out 4-6 Weeks

Tennessee Vols receiver Gerald Jones is hurt again, this time it's his ankle. The Vols most experienced receiver can't seem to shake the injury bug as suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday's scrimmage.

The junior receiver has been battling back from offseason surgery to his wrist. The new injury could keep him out 4-6 weeks, presenting another challenge for the UT offense to deal with. The Vols currently have their top three returning receivers from a year ago battling injuries. Senior Austin Rogers (ACL) is out for the year and Denarius Moore (foot) is expected to miss at least the first two games of the season.

With this loss, the Vols are left with Quinton Hancock and converted tight end Brandon Warren as their top two receivers. Meaning, freshman Nu'Keese Richardson, Zach Rogers and Marsalis Teague will all be give ample opportunity to step up and prove they are ready for SEC action.

Then again, if the quarterback production is anything like last season, it doesn't matter who is out running routes for the Vols.

What's In Theaters August 21?

Inglourious Basterds leads the list of three movie releases this week.

Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as “The Basterds,” Raine’s squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own. The Quentin Tarantino directed film looks to dominate the week in theaters. It's going to be awesome, and I am going to see it.
Post Grad
Ryden Malby graduates from college and is forced to move back into her childhood home with her eccentric family, while she attempts to find a job, the right guy, and just a hint of where her life is headed.
This sounds like the typical high-school date movie, but with Matt Saracen (Friday Night Lights). I'm not going to say that I'm not going to see it, because I probably will - I'm just not going to be seeing it this weekend.
Shorts
A young boy's discovery of a colorful, wish-granting rock causes chaos in the suburban town of Black Falls when jealous kids and scheming adults alike set out to get their hands on it.
This sounds like the dumbest movie ever.

Plaxico Burress Is Going To Jail

Plaxico Burress, the moron that shot himself in the leg at New York nightclub last year because he was wearing sweatpants and the gun went off is headed to jail for two years.

Burress has pleaded guilty to a weapon charge, and agreed to a two-year prison sentence, according to reports by several media outlets. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 22. Burress reportedly pleaded guilty to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a reduced charge. He agreed to a two-year prison sentence, of which he reportedly will serve 20 months, and two years of supervised release under the terms of a plea deal, according to reports.

Burress is currently a free agent after being released by the Giants. This seems eerily familiar to the Michael Vick sentence. It's ironic that when Vick comes out, Plax goes in, but anyway he was a moron and is being treated like one. I suspect that when his sentence is over, he will attempt to come back to the NFL the same way Vick did, but we don't have to worry about that for a couple years.

Tampa's Aqib Talib Got Drunk, Hit Somebody

Just when we thought there haven't been any alcohol-related arrests from the NFL lately, Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib stepped up. The prjoected starting cornerback for the Bucs is accused of resisting arrest without violence and simple battery after being picked up by the Florida Highway Patrol overnight according to reports.

According to Fox Sports, the police report alleges Talib hit David Duggan in the right ear and neck with a closed fist late Wednesday night and was uncooperative when officers arrived at the scene. The report said there was an "indication of alcohol influence."

Talib, who was the first-round draft pick for the Bucs out of Kansas in 2008, was booked around 1:00 a.m. and released from the Pinellas County jail about 6:00 a.m. after he posted $300 bail, the St. Petersburg Times reported. Both charges are misdemeanors, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that another professional athlete made a few bad choices. The 23-year old will be kept on a short leash from now on, you better believe that.

UT Appealing Brown Ruling

Without revealing what the initial NCAA ruling is regarding the Bryce Brown case, the University of Tennessee is appealing whatever punishment was handed out.

Many see as a worst case scenario punishment for this type of violation, a one or two game suspension and Brown would have to pay back whatever monetary number that was given to him in his high school days. For more on the investigation, check out yesterday's Knox Animal report.

Even though UT would not comment on what the ruling was and wouldn't go into detail about what was being investigated, they did confirm that they investigation was complete - meaning that the distraction of this mess should be over with soon.

Cardinals Sign Smoltz... Why?

When most teams bolster their pitching staffs for a pennant race, the St. Louis Cardinals made theirs worse by signing washed up 42-year old John Smoltz.

Smoltz was released last week by the Boston Red Sox because he couldn't get anybody out. He was 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA in eight starts for the Red Sox. The Red Sox saw the writing on the wall and canned the former Cy-Young award winner. Many thought the move signaled the end of a great career for Smoltz, who has 212 career wins in his 20 years of big league experience. However, the Cardinals feel that Smoltz still has something left in the tank.

Smoltz will likely be used as a fifth or spot starter in the rotation, but the most effective use of him would be to put him in the bullpen. While I believe Smoltz will be average at best with the Cardinals, they feel like he has a chance to solidify their pitching staff.

T.O.'s Toe Hurts Too Much To Play

We are use to seeing Buffalo Bills receiver Terrell Owens cry about things, so it really shouldn't be a shock to anybody that a toe injury is keeping Owens out of practice and he is scheduled to miss the upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers Saturday.

What everybody seems to be forgetting is that this is only the pre-season, so frankly nobody in the Buffalo organization is necessarily in a rush for him to come back. A nagging injury like this could be problematic for a receiver if suffered in the regular season, but during the pre-season - he should have no problem recovering in time for the regular season.

Owens sprained the toe in a 21-18 loss to the Tennessee Titans in the Hall of Fame game August 9. He isn't expected to resume practice until mid-next week.

Vols Number 1 Recruit Brown, Ineligible?

The NCAA is currently investigating the eligibility of University of Tennessee freshman Bryce Brown. The issue at question is Brown's amateur status as a high school athlete - translating to some people believe Brown was given money in order to visit colleges and attend camps while in high school.

The good news for the Vols in the situation is that they aren't at fault this time. The bad news is that if these reports have any substance, Brown could be ruled ineligible. Not to mention this is a major distraction for the entire Vols nation, who is attempting to get this season off to a great start and spit the bad taste of last season out of their mouths for good.

Brown, the number one running back recruit in the nation, has impressed Tennessee coaches and players during his time there already. He showed up in shape and his work ethic has been tremendous. He is expected to be a big contributor this season and has been spending extensive time with the Vols first team offense during fall camp.

Favre To Sign With Vikings

You have got to be kidding me. Brett Favre, the quarterback that can't make up his mind about anything is reportedly about to sign a contract with the Vikings for between $10 and $12 million, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

This is the same Brett Favre that two weeks ago said he was going to stay retired. Even though he said he would stay retired, a little voice inside each of us still told us that it may not be officially over for Favre - and it turns out that the little voice was right all along.

Rumors of the 39-year old Favre signing started up yesterday as reports surfaced that said numerous Vikings players still firmly believed that Favre would be a Viking when the regular season started. Those reports apparently had substance as Mortensen is a legitimate source for NFL information.

Favre is an idiot and this whole situation makes me lose respect for the guy. How can you count on a guy to be the decision maker for your team if he can't even decide if he wants to play football or not. Favre is washed up and his ego has surpassed his playing ability. The Packers defensive players should be licking their chops right now for a chance to smash the has-been into the ground two games this season.

Strasburg Gets Big Boy Money

The Washington Nationals first round pick and number one overall pick in this year's draft, pitcher Stephen Strasburg agreed to a record four year, $15.67 million contract just before the Tuesday 12:01 a.m. deadline.

The previous record was held by Prior, who received a five year, $10.5 million contract as the number two overall pick. Prior has done everything to be labeled a bust in the major leagues, so Strasburg is hoping to be better Prior in that area as well.

With Scott Boras as Strasburg's agent, everybody knew that it would take some money to sign the phenom from San Diego State. The right-handed flame thrower went 13-1 last season with 195 strikeouts and a 1.32 ERA. He routinely hits +100 mph and has a curve that falls off the table.
While it was a big day for the Nationals, it may be a bigger day for Major League Baseball as a whole. With Boras mediating the money talks, many thought that the greedy asshole would demand a contract in the $20 millions and Strasburg would either be unsigned or the draft would be ruined forever because of it. However, Boras and Washington was able to put together a record deal, but it was a decent deal for everybody involved. Strasburg is a phenom, so he deserves to be paid like one - that doesn't mean that he won't be a bust, but he has been more impressive as a college pitcher than possibly everybody that has ever pitched a college game.

Orioles Unload Huff... About Time

The Baltimore Orioles made a move, that I have been making in video games for two years now: they traded 32 year-old Aubrey Huff.

The Detroit Tigers acquired Huff for Single-A right-handed pitcher Brett Jacobsen, who is 1-3 with a 3.74 ERA and six saves in 35 games with Lakeland this year.

The veteran utility man was hitting .253 with 13 homeruns, 24 doubles and 72 RBI in 110 games with the Orioles this season. While those numbers aren't terrible, Huff on the roster meant less playing time for some of the Orioles younger players. The fact that the Orioles traded him for a single-A level player proves that the O's were thinking the same thing.

With the season winding down the next move the O's need to make is to get rid of the aging Melvin Mora who is hitting .264, three homeruns and 31 RBI in 81 games this season. The 37-year old third baseman is just too old to be effective any more. While the younger players need veteran advice, Mora's lack of production should signify the end of his career and time in Baltimore.

Is Madden 10, The Best Madden Ever?

The Madden football franchise has been one of the most popular titles in sports video game history, if not the most popular. With this year's installment to the franchise, Madden NFL 10, EA Sports has raised the bar not only a little bit, but they upped their game to an incredible new level to not only make this the best football video game ever made, but possibly the best sports video game ever.

The first thing that catches your eye is the Welcome/Start Screen Display - The typical flashing press start button appears in the middle of the lower half of the screen has been replaced by fans in the stands holding a sign that tells you to press start. Not that big of a deal, but something that told me that EA actually took time to redo some things instead of basically copying the same game model year from last year.

Into the welcome screen, the same expected game modes are all there (franchise, play now, online, superstar, etc..). Those are all expected to be there since they make Madden the football game that it is. What I wanted to see is what they did with the gameplay and franchise mode. So, the first thing I did was log online and downloaded the most current rosters and then started up a franchise with the Washington Redskins.

To my surprise, the franchise mode was completely revamped with a new look and it looks awesome. Everything is included in one place in a handy format on the right side of the screen, making navigation a breeze. From schedule, stats, roster management, funds, and franchise options, it's all there. Already liking this, I start up a game and am wowed even further.

Like MLB The Show, the fans are shown outside the stadium walking around, giving the game a true sense of authenticity that football video games have been missing. Since I was the Redskins, Jason Campbell was shown tossing the ball around before the game. Hopefully now that he is warmed up, he won't suck ass like I am used to seeing in real life. However, if he didn't suck, the game wouldn't be very realistic... Right?

Once the game starts, I am blown away. The players look awesome, the game moves fluidly, the plays are accurate to the real NFL playbooks, the tackling is realistic, etc.. I could go on forever about the great things EA has done with this year's edition of Madden, but I will just let you find out for yourself when playing the game. However, one thing I will go on about a little more is the ratings given to the players this year. Finally, All-Pro caliber players stand out from average players in this game thanks to the rating system. If Santana Moss is matched up with a third or fourth string corner, he is going to free himself up enough to have a big day. EA has embraced this fact and this happens in the game. If Skins' 285 pound fullback Mike Sellars is at the goaline, he won't be stopped by a 195 pound cornerback before plunging into the endzone anymore. The realism in this game is sick.

Overall, this is the best sports game I have ever played and that is saying a lot since I play a hell of a lot of sports games. Until this game, MLB: The Show 08 and 09 were hands down the best sports games I have ever played. I have often wondered what a football game would look like if it was similar to MLB: The Show, and it looks like EA has basically answered my question. The game is fun as hell and it still maintains the realistic element of football. After about five years of mediocre Madden games, EA finally buckled down and put some effort into this year's edition - and they nailed it. This game is definitely worth the $60, so pick it up if you haven't already and start playing. The only reason I don't give this game a perfect score, because that's saying that there is no room for improvement, but this is as damn close to perfect as I have ever seen.
Knox Animal Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Vols Linebackers Are Good Rappers

What the hell is wrong with all of these University of Tennessee athletes thinking they can rap? First there was Bobby Maze and Renaldo Woolridge of the basketball team showing off their lyrical skills, now the football team is trying to compete in the rap game. Yes, the linebackers suck just as much, if not more.

Eagles Hate Dogs, Sign Vick

We all wondered what team would take the risk and sign the former star NFL quarterback Michael Vick. After much speculation and debating, the team that ultimately made the deal was the Philadelphia Eagles, signing Vick to a two-year worth $1.6 million the first year and $5.2 million the second year. He can also earn up to $3 million in incentives over the two years of the deal.

The Eagles remained a dark horse the entire time and were even among the 26 teams that denied interest in Vick. However, we know now that they in fact lied. There are two reasons why they might have lied. The first being that they didn't want any other teams, especially those in their division know that they were interested in Vick because they didn't want anybody to sign him just so they couldn't. The second reason being that they didn't want the public to run wild with this and give them hell for eagerly and willingly ready to take on the ex-convict. We like the latter reason.

Now that it is all said and done, Vick and the Eagles look like a perfect fit. The Eagles run a version of the Wildcat and with playmakers Donavon McNabb, Brian Westbrook, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin already in place, adding Vick to the mix could spell trouble for opposing teams. However, there is one important thing to remember here: Vick has not played football in two years.
The NFL has changed a lot in the past two years and at this time, we don't know what kind of shape Vick is in and how he will adjust to his new team. It is foolish to think Vick will jump right in there and be as effective as he once was as a quarterback in the NFL. We don't even know for sure how he will be used in Philadelphia. What we do know for sure is that Vick is one hell of an athlete and if he still has the athleticism, he will continue to give defenses fits.

What's In Theaters August 14?

This week's movie theater releases feature a couple of interesting flicks.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Used-car liquidator Don Ready is hired by a flailing auto dealership to turn their Fourth of July sale into a majorly profitable event. With Jeremy Piven as Don Ready, this looks like its going to be a funny as hell movie. This is my pick of the week and I am going to try my best to get the lady to go see it with me.

Bandslam

A new kid in town assembles a fledgling rock band -- together, they achieve their dreams and compete against the best in the biggest event of the year, a battle of the bands. This movie interests me just based on the music part. Will it be a good movie, probably not, but it could be entertaining. Plus it has Vanessa Hudgens in it, so that's a good thing.

District 9

An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. This will be a lot of people's top pick this week, but to me it looks dumb as hell.

It Might Get Loud

A documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians: the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White. This looks like a great documentary and I will end up seeing it eventually, just won't end up seeing it in theaters.

Spread

A sex comedy centered on a serial womanizer and his jilted lover. With Ashton Kutcher, this movie looks like it could be moderately entertaining. Just doesn't pack enough power to compete with the other new movies this week.

The Pool Boys (American Summer)

A pool boy and a gardener turn an empty mansion into a home for women who belong to the world's oldest profession. Being a Matthew Lillard fan, this movie looks decent enough to warrant a viewing, however it will be a little bit. If you see it, let me know how it is.

The Time Traveler's Wife

A romantic drama about a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage. With Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, this movie has the setup of a typical book made to movie chick flick. Even though the lady wants to see this movie, I have to put the foot down on this one. There is no way in hell I will be seeing this movie tonight...

Vols Marlon Walls Cleared To Play

University of Tennessee freshman defensive tackle Marlon Walls has been cleared by the NCAA to play this season for the Vols according to a Volquest.com report.

Walls is a four star recruit out of Chatham, Virginia and is supposed to be a stud. Originally recruited as a linebacker, the 6-foot-4, 225 pounder enrolled at Hargrave last year to improve his grades. He was turned into a defensive tackle and now weighs 290 pounds. He is expected to contribute immediately on the thin Vols defensive line.

This is good news for the Vols as Walls was one of their top recruits. He is expected to join the Vols immediately for practice.

R.I.P. Les Paul - You Were The Man

American Jazz guitarist and inventor, Les Paul has died at 94 years old due to complications from pneumonia. He died at White Plains Hospital in New York.

The music legend is credited for such innovations as overdubbing, delay and phasing effects, and multi track recording, but is most known for the creation of the Gibson Les Paul guitar.

His musical genius helped make music what it is today. There is not one person that is into music that hasn't heard of Les Paul, so that alone speaks magnitudes about his accomplishments. He will be greatly missed in the music world, but his accomplishments are celebrated every day when we hear a guitar strumming.

Sports Briefs August 13 Edition

It's been a relatively slow couple of days in the sports world. Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino admitted he had an affair in 2003 and reportedy gave her $3,000 for an abortion. News of that has pretty much clogged up all the sports news, which is unfortunate since I really don't give a shit about the incident or that it became public yesterday.

After injuring himself on the first drive of the 2008 season, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is back and ready to start in the Patriots first preseason game tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Indianapolis Colts starting safeties are hurting as Pro-Bowl SS Bob Sanders has been battling an injured knee since last season and is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews to discuss the issue. As if that wasn't bad enough, Pro-Bowl FS Antoine Bethea broke his hand in practice yesterday. He will be sidelined indefinitely and will be able to play when he can withstand the pain, but playing with basically one arm isn't going to be an easy feat.

Denver Broncos rookie running back Knowshon Moreno ended his holdout and has joined Broncos camp. Early reports are that Moreno will be the Broncos starting running back in Week 1.

While San Francisco 49ers first round pick Michael Crabtree continues to hold out on his contract, it confirms my suspicions that Crabtree is a selfish asshole. I stated that he would be a bust when he was drafted, but apparently we will have to wait until he signs a contract to offically say he is a bust. Meanwhile, the Oakland Raiders first round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey continues to make strides in Raiders camp. Currently Heyward-Bey is slated to be a starter for the Raiders in Week 1.

Forget the G-Gun, It's the Nu-Gun For Vols Offense

After watching the G-Gun with Gerald Jones fail miserably the last two years, the University of Tennessee coaches have implemented the Nu-Gun in hopes of gaining more success.

Vols freshman receiver Nu'Keese Richarson is the main focus of the new offensive package, and could provide the spark needed for the package to be successful. Richardson's speed could be exactly what is needed.

However, the early stages of the Nu-Gun are looking rough, but that doesn't mean the freshman won't be able to pick it up by time the season begins. While it is just a work in progress now, this package could be key to rejuvenating a Vols offense that was missing all of last year.

Stallworth's House Arrest Isn't Really House Arrest

When suspended Cleveland Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth served 24 days in jail and was sentenced to two years of house arrest and eight years of probation for killing a man with with his car, I thought he was getting off easy. Now that Stallworth has been granted the ability to leave his house and train with a strength and conditioning coach, the sentence seems absolutely ridiculous.

Why should Stallworth be able to leave his house to go train? He is living the life of an unemployed player that just can't find a team, not one that is suspended because he killed somebody. Stallworth should be in jail. He should not be able to receive the benefit of leaving his property to go see a personal trainer five days a week. If anything, at least make the trainer come to Stallworth's house.

It is absurd that Stallworth got off this lightly anyways, and this just confirms the insanity. Just because somebody is a professional athlete does not give them a right to get the lightest possible sentence. He should be in jail, period. If I got in a car drunk and killed somebody with my car, there is no way in hell that I wouldn't still be in jail, let alone be allowed to train with my personal trainer at his facility five days a week.

Josh Hamilton Isn't Sober Anymore

When Josh Hamilton emerged as a reformed person when he reached the major leagues in 2007, his troubles appeared to be in the past. However, when pictures appeared this weekend of Hamilton partying it up in an Arizona bar in January, over reactors have come out of the wood works.

Hamilton, who was drafted with the number one draft pick by the Tampa Bay Rays as an 18-year-old in 1999, struggled to cope with the early fame and money that came along with being a teenage phenom. Drugs and alcohol became a way of life and he was out of baseball for three years while getting himself clean. He stopped taking drugs and drinking alcohol in 2005 and worked his way up before making the majors in 2007 with the Cincinnati Reds. It was a success story that everybody was proud of.

After the 2007 season, Hamilton was traded to the Rangers, and he has become a star in the league. His performance in the 2008 homerun derby made him a household name and everybody was impressed with the way he conquered his demons and made something out of his once promising career.

Hamilton's biggest support comes from his wife, and according to Hamilton, she was the first person he talked to after the January incident occurred. It's as simple as Hamilton used poor judgement that night. What people fail to remember is that this dude had a serious problem. Yea, this relapse doesn't look good, but the important thing is that Hamilton isn't making any excuses about it. He said he called his wife, the Rangers and MLB to tell them what had happened. That is a good support system, and they are helping him out. Just because he was sober, didn't mean that he doesn't still have problems - he made that evident with his decision.

What's In Movie Theaters August 7?

It looks like my streak of seeing a new release movie on release date will end at two weeks in a row because this week sucks for new releases. If I haven't turned you off to them yet, here they are:

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

This is a movie that brings back a lot of childhood memories. For those who are unfamiliar, its an action-oriented thriller about an elite team of gadget-equipped, military spies who venture to the ends of the Earth in search of the international arms dealer (Christopher Eccleston) masterminding a diabolical plot to plunge the planet into complete chaos. G.I. Joe consumed a lot of my younger years and while I am slightly intrigued by this movie, seeing it on release date in the theater doesn't fit into my plans.

Julie & Julia

Here we have a classic tribute to a legend of a chef, Julia Child. Meryl Streep plays Julia Child in this movie where her biggest fan, a suburban housewife (Amy Adams) who tried to cook 524 of her idol’s famous recipes in a single year. Some people may find this movie intriguing, but it doesn't interest me in the least bit. I do like food though...

Paper Heart

Here is the Romantic comedy for the week. Paper Heart focuses on a jaded young woman (Charlene Yi) who meets the guy of her dreams (Michael Cera) while traveling across the country interviewing people for a documentary she’s making about the meaning of love. This sounds like it could be okay because Michael Cera is funny sometimes. Seth Rogen is also in this movie, so it might not be that terrible, right?

A Perfect Getaway

This is a Horror flick about a newlywed couple (Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich) whose backpacking honeymoon on Hawaii turns into a nightmarish struggle for survival when they discover that psychopaths are stalking and slaughtering tourists camping out on the beaches. This sounds kinda entertaining, but not entertaining enough to see in theaters because we all know that it will actually suck.

Do any of these movies interest you? Share your opinions...

Aerosmith's Tyler Injured During Concert... Again

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler was airlifted to a hospital after falling off stage during a concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. The incident reportedly happened after the sound system failed and Tyler was trying to entertain the crowd by dancing.

The 61-year-old Tyler was on a catwalk when he fell backward onto a couple of fans, injuring his neck and shoulder. It was not immediately known how serious the injuries were, but Tyler is reported to be in good spirits.

Now there is a reason why old people take it easy and retire. That reason is that they simply cannot function like they could in their earlier years. This is just another setback the band has had while on tour this year. The band postponed seven shows this summer after Tyler injured his leg at a show in June. Bassist Tom Hamilton had non-invasive surgery, forcing him to miss some tour dates, guitarist Brad Whitford missed some shows after injuring his head and guitarist Joe Perry experienced complications with his surgically replaced knee, forcing the band to cancel a show.

I don't know, but it sure seems like this band should call it quits soon before something really serious happens. They would all be much safer playing bridge or bingo in an old folks home with the rest of the old people in the world.

Will Pedro Martinez Be The Phillies Secret Weapon?

When the Philadelphia Phillies signed 37 year-old Pedro Martinez to a one-year deal in mid July, they were buying themselves a washed up former Cy-Young award winner to eat up some innings down the stretch of the season. What they didn't realize was that the old guy still has some good stuff left in his tank.

Martinez went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts for the Mets last season. In March, he pitched for the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic, working six innings of scoreless relief in two games but still went unsigned - until the Phillies gambled.

In three starts for Class A Clearwater, Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Reading, Martinez has given up seven earned runs and nine hits in 12 1/3 innings. However, he has improved with each start and most importantly his recovery between starts has been ideal. On Wednesday night, Martinez pitched easily his best outing of the season for Double-A Reading. Martinez struck out 11 in six innings of work. He gave up two hits, including one homerun.

While Martinez may never be the pitcher he was earlier in his career with the Expos and Red Sox, he still is very capable of putting together solid outings in the big leagues. With the Phillies prize acquisition this season being former Indians pitcher Cliff Lee, Martinez may just surprise some folks. With a healthy Martinez on the staff, he is one hell of a fifth or spot-starter to throw into the mix - giving the Phillies one hell of a pitching staff to compliment their incredible lineup.

Prince Fielder Is Angry... Fat

Milwaukee Brewers slugger Prince Fielder was drilled by Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Guillermo Mota with a pitch last night, prompting the hefty Fielder to hunt down Mota after the game.

In what appeared to be an obvious retaliation beaning stemming from when Dodgers star Manny Ramirez was hit with a pitch in the seventh inning, Fielder was pelted in the top of the ninth and Mota was promptly ejected.

According the ESPN.com, the hefty Fielder charged through the clubhouse en route to the Dodgers locker room. After being retrained by teammates, the excitement was over.

Fielder obviously was too tired when he got to Dodgers locker room that he turned around after feeling like he was going to pass out. That must have been some scene to watch as a biggest vegetarian in history was running through the clubhouse. I would imagine it was very similar to the scene in Borat where Borat and that big naked dude were wrestling and running around for a little while.

Paula Abdul Is Officially Leaving Idol... For Real

When news broke last night that veteran American Idol judge Paula Abdul would not be returning to the show, I thought riots were going to break out. So, I looked outside but didn't see anything. It was then I realized that nobody actually gives a shit that Abdul was leaving the show.

Abdul broke the news herself on her twitter page, and as expected there were a few devastated fans. Abdul has been with the show for eight seasons, so even though change is sometimes shocking to some people, it is necessary. However, Abdul is coming off her best season ever on the show. She actually had some productive feedback to give to the contestants other than her famous comments about appearance. It will be interesting to see if Idol replaces her, or decides to stick it out with Simon, Randy and Kara.

While Abdul basically added nothing productive to the show, her presence embodies what the show is. Being an American Idol is partly about image and Abdul, Randy and Simon are the image of American Idol. The show will never be the same, but then again it could be a lot better knowing that Abdul's worthless comments will not be heard by the masses that flock to their TV sets when Idol is on the air.

It's Football Time In Tennessee... Sorta

The Tennessee Vols are set to open their first fall practice today. Here is the press release issued by the University:

Tennessee begins the first preseason football camp of the Lane Kiffin era Tuesday afternoon at Haslam Field. Start time is set for 2:45 p.m. Kiffin, who this season becomes only the third head coach at UT in the last 33 years, led the Vols through spring drills and has been on the job for eight months. But the stakes grow considerably larger with the fall camp kickoff coming just a month and a day before the 2009 opener against Western Kentucky.

Four acclimation practices -- one each day this week -- are on tap leading into the team's first workout in full pads Saturday. After hosting the annual media day gathering Sunday afternoon, the Vols have two-a-day practices scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week. Single practices sessions are set for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to conclude the second week's slate. The preseason scrimmage schedule has not been announced.

Well, the time is finally here for the pieces of the puzzle to be put together. How will the freshman fare, how are the position battles going, have the quarterbacks improved? All those questions and more will be answered between now and the season opener against Western Kentucky on September, 5. Check back daily for updates regarding the Vols because Knox Animal tells it like it is...

O's Matusz Set For MLB Debut Tonight

The Baltimore Orioles top pick from the 2008 draft, Brian Matusz, is set to make his Major League debut tonight against the Detroit Tigers. Matusz, the fourth overall pick from a year ago is 11-2 with a 1.91 ERA through three minor league levels this season. Supplementing the record and ERA, the lefty has 121 strikeouts against 32 walks in 113 innings of work. If the numbers are any indication, he is ready for the bigs.

The Orioles may have the shittiest record in the AL East, but they are a damn exciting team. They are debuting talented youngsters every week it seems, and all indications are pointing to the Orioles having a bright future if they can keep these kids together. With Chris Tillman's debut on the mound last week, the Orioles have called up their top two pitching prospects in a matter of two weeks. That right there is a sign that the future is now for the O's. So when Matusz hits the mound tonight against the Tigers with Matt Wieters behind the plate, Orioles have something to be proud of - The Orioles actually grew some talent and didn't trade it away for old washed up veterans. Now they need to get to work on improving their crappy 44-61 record.

Fedor Is Scared Of The UFC, Signs With Strikeforce

The man that many consider to be the top heavyweight MMA fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce.

Emelianenko became a free agent after Affliction Entertainment canceled its Aug. 1 event two weeks ago. He will make his debut on Showtime under a co-promoted Strikeforce/M-1 Global production this fall.

UFC's Dana White wanted to sign Fedor real bad, and why wouldn't he want Fedor? The UFC already has talent such as Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir and Antonio Noguera. Emelianenko has already beaten Noguera twice and due to an accidental cut the third fight caused a no contest, but Noguera has improved greatly since then - making a rematch an interesting match-up. Strikeforce has Brett Rogers and Fabricio Werdum to throw at Fedor as possible opponents, which give Fedor virtually no challenge and the Russian will destroy them just like he destroys everybody else.

It used to seem like Fedor was looking for who will give him the best fight, but now it is obvious that Fedor is avoiding who will give him the best fight. Everybody wants to see a Brock Lesnar vs. Fedor Emelianenko fight, but Fedor is too scared to put his 30-0-1 record on the line against anybody who is capable of defeating him at this time in his career. Until Emelianenko fights the best of the UFC, he should not be considered the number one heavyweight in the world. Let the number one guy in the world be the guy that wants to take on a challenge, not just continue to plow through average talent.

Tequila Got LenDale White Fat

Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White said alcohol was to blame for him being a hefty 265 pound running back last season. White showed up at Titans camp this season at a swift 228 pounds, leading to several questions about his diet.

White said he often enjoyed alcohol and Patron was his liquor of choice. Well no shit, everybody knows that when you drink, you gain weight from the extra calories.

So, it will be interesting to see how well White performs this season at his new weight because from my knowledge he is used mostly in short-yardage situations. I'm not a genius or anything, but doesn't he want to be heavier if he wants to bust through the goal line? With Chris Johnson's speed and play making ability the Titans would have to be stupid not to utilize him more than White, who has averaged less than three yards per carry.

Funny People Is Not Funny

I will admit that when I went to see Funny People on it's release night Friday I didn't have very high hopes. My prediction was damn near perfect because not only was Funny People not a very good movie, it wasn't even that funny.

This movie did everything to confirm that fact that Adam Sandler is one of the most overrated comedian/actors in history. The dude is just not that funny, so I don't know why people continue to eat up his sub-mediocre humor.

The movie did have it's bright spots with Leslie Mann, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman, but it wasn't enough to save the two hour and 16 minute movie.

If you like wasting your money on mediocre movies then this movie is perfect for you. If you are smart and you really want to see this movie, you should wait until it hits a dollar movie theater or video rental store. If you are a genius, you will probably just avoid the movie altogether.

Knox Animal rating: 2.5 out of 5
