West Virginia and South Florida To Do Battle

Usually Friday night college football games are for the scrub teams, but that is not the case this week. No. 21 West Virginia travels to South Florida in what should be a great game.

This is a matchup of playmakers. All you have to do is look out there on the field and spot a number seven for each team. For West Virginia (6-1, 2-0), running back Noel Devine is one of the quickest players int he country. He has rushed for 912 yards and 10 touchdowns on 137 carries. For South Florida (5-2, 1-2), the season ending injury to senior quarterback Matt Grothe opened the door for another playmaker in freshman B.J. Daniels. Daniels has thrown for seven touchdowns and 864 yards, but his legs have also done a lot of damage. He has rushed for a team-leading 415 yards and four touchdowns.

Virginia Tech Seeks Revenge

With BCS Championship hopes dead, the Virginia Tech Hokies hope to take out some frustration on an under-achieving North Carolina team tonight in Blacksburg, Va.

After losing 28-23 last week to Georgia Tech, the 14th ranked Hokies (5-2, 3-1) look to bounce back against another ACC foe in the Tar Heels. North Carolina started the season ranked No. 21, however they find themselves unranked at 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference at this point.

Virginia Tech finds themselves as a 17 point favorite. With Tyrod Taylor and freshman running back Ryan Williams, it's easy to understand why. Williams has emerged as one of them most productive backs in the country, gaining 834 yards on 140 carries and 10 touchdowns. Taylor's mobility at the quarterback position always poses a threat for opposing defenses.

As we have seen on countless Thursdays, an upset is always lurking, but look for Virginia Tech to pound North Carolina and keep the Tar Heels winless in this one.

If Your Best Is Delhomme, You Are In Trouble

Usually when you have thrown a league high 13 interceptions in six games, you don't find yourself with a starting job in the NFL. However, for Jake Delhomme - he remains the number one guy in Carolina.

According to ESPN, Panthers coach John Fox announced after practice Wednesday that he still believes Delhomme gives the Panthers "the best chance to win" and won't bench him for Sunday's game at Arizona, something he contemplated earlier in the week.

Delhomme has committed 15 turnovers while throwing only four touchdown passes in Carolina's 2-4 start this season - not exactly the numbers you would expect from a starting NFL quarterback. But then again, what is Carolina supposed to do? With  A.J. Feeley and Matt Moore serving as the backups, there isn't an urgency to make the quarterback switch.

The Panthers gave Delhomme a five-year contract extension in the offseason and I bet the Panthers are second guessing that big time. He has thrown 18 interceptions in seven games dating to the playoff game last season where he threw five interceptions in a 33-13 loss to the Cardinals. He has a 56.5 passer rating, ranking 32nd in the NFL and with 32 teams in the league, that is pretty damn bad.

So, why not give Feeley or Moore a chance? They can't do any worse than Delhomme is doing this season.

Duke Calhoun Wants Upset

When you think about Memphis, you don't normally think football. Basketball is usually discussed, but football is usually left to other parts of the country. Memphis (2-5) plays host to East Carolina (4-3) tonight as the Tigers try to change the way they they are portrayed as a basketball-only school.

Led  by senior receiver Duke Calhoun, the Tigers will try to beat ECU through the air. Calhouns 40 receptions for 666 yards and five touchdowns leads the team in every category. If Memphis wants to put points on the board, surely Calhoun will be involved.

It's expected to be a rainy one tonight, but that is to be expected since its in Tennessee - where it has rained nearly every damn day for the past three months. I would expect ECU to win this game fairly easily, but it won't stop Calhoun and Memphis from trying to win this one.

Zorny Takes On Eagles For Last Time?

After all the speculation about Washington Redskins head coach Jim Zorn being fired, Redskins management said that Zorn will remain the Redskins coach through 2009. Whether that is true or not will be seen, but one thing that is certain is that Zorn will have a lot of pressure to put a good product on the field tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles (3-2).

Zorn was stripped of his play-calling duties this week as Sherm Lewis will direct the offense. Lewis was lured out of retirement two weeks ago to take a job as a consultant, spent 22 years as an assistant but hadn't been in the NFL since 2004. The switch to Lewis as the play-caller came almost immediately following a 14-6 home loss to previously winless Kansas City last Sunday. The irony of this whole thing is that Zorn was basically brought to Washington as the offensive coordinator, based on the fact that he was a good play caller. The Redskins (2-4) are averaging 13.2 points, fourth-fewest in the league - so Zorn's playcalling this season at least has been terrible.

Jason Campbell will remain the starting quarterback despite being pulled last week in favor of Todd Collins. Campbell has struggled this season, but most of that can be put on an old-injured offensive line. Campbell is not talented enough to make things happen on his own, he needs time in the pocket if the Redskins hope to see any offensive success against the Eagles tonight.

The Eagles on the other hand have problems of their own. After a 13-9 loss to Oakland last week, many questions remained unanswered at this point. The wildcat offense has been atrocious for the Eagles, so that experiment has failed. Their best weapon, Bryon Westbrook, isn't getting the touches he needs - so the Eagles play calling is also being questioned at this point.

Vols Roll Into Bama

After having a bye last week, the Tennessee Volunteers have had plenty of time to prepare for Alabama. With that being said, there are a lot of questions surrounding this Vols football team that will be answered today. Is Jonathan Crompton capable of putting together two straight impressive performances, or will he struggle mighily against the intense Crimson Tide defense? Is the Vols defense under Monte Kiffin capable of shutting down the running game and sophomore Heisman candidate Mark Ingram? Is Julio Jones too big of a receiver for this Vols secondary? Or do the Vols have just enough in the key areas to give Bama trouble en route to an upset?

Trent Steelman Will Run All Over You

Rutgers and Army bring us Friday night football action tonight and it could actually be a decent game. Neither team is very good, but then again any football game is better than no football game. Rutgers (4-2) will lean heavily on the running game, and so will Army (3-4), who has the nations No. 12 rushing attack - averaging 222.6 yards per game. Freshman Trent Steelman leads Army in both passing and rushing - having much more success on the ground. Steelman has 407 yards on 117 carries, and you can look for him to get a bunch of opportunities to make something happen tonight.

What's In Theater's Friday, October 23?

Amelia

A look at the life of legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 in an attempt to make a flight around the world. True stories are always cool, so that means this movie is pretty cool. Hilary Swank plays Earhart in this movie, and she will probably do a good job. Million Dollar Baby anyone?

Astro Boy

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Sounds cool if you are a nerdy little kid.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

A young boy named Darren Shan meets a mysterious man at a freak show who turns out to be a Vampire. After a series of events Darren must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque Du Freak and become a Vampire. This movie will probably be pretty awesome since John C. Reily is in it. He makes everything good.

Saw VI

Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective Hoffman has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw's legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.  You know, for some reason I just do not get sick of Saw movies. They are always good and I still believe that the first Saw was the greatest horror movie ever made. It is a clever series and if they want to keep making and releasing them - I will watch them.

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D

Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, is bored with doing the same thing every year for Halloween. One day he stumbles into Christmas Town, and is so taken with the idea of Christmas that he tries to get the resident bats, ghouls, and goblins of Halloween town to help him put on Christmas instead of Halloween -- but alas, they can't get it quite right. Originally released in 1993, this is going to be much better because it is in 3D. Everything is better in 3D right?

Bobby Bowden Might Be Washed Up

What the hell has happened to Florida State University football? Well, the simple answer to that is Bobby Bowden just does not have what it takes to lead a top-notch Division 1 football program. The Seminoles are sitting at 2-4 after starting the season with high expectations - not exactly where they hoped they would be at this point in the season.

The Seminoles are led by junior quarterback Christian Ponder, who has thrown for nine touchdowns and 1,781 yards this season. Florida State averages 315.7 yards per game - good for 11th in the country.

North Carolina (4-2) hasn't had quite the same success on offense as they rank 117 in the country with 282.2 total yards per game. Junior quarterback Tyler Yates has struggled at times this season and has thrown seven interceptions to only six touchdowns.

Tulsa Likes Weeknight Games

Tulsa has become has houshold name this football season as the Golden Hurricanes have become accustomed to weeknight games. Tonight marks the third time that Tulsa has hit the gridiron on a non-Saturday. Most recent being a 21-28 loss last Wednesday to No. 5 Boise State.

It's no secret that Tulsa (4-2) likes to throw the ball. University of Texas transfer, sophomore quarterback G.J. Kinne has thrown for 1,296 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. The UTEP (2-4) offense relies heavily on the ground game and Donald Buckram. The junior has rushed for 618 yards on 96 carries and six touchdowns this season.

Tulsa is an eight point favorite in this game. UTEP is home, but all signs point to Tulsa to win this game.

About Time: Knox Animal Is Back!

All I can say is: It's about damn time team Knox Animal put some points on the scoreboard. Drew Brees and Tom Brady had monster days, along with running back Ray Rice. Owen Daniels scored two touchdowns and I couldn't be happier with my fantasy team. The funny thing is that besides my quarterbacks, Defense and kicker, everybody was a reserve. However, that will not be the case as they have all earned starting roles, except for maybe Bernard Berrian who will be replaced by Vikings teammate Sidney Rice next week. So Steven Jackson, Clinton Portis, Terrell Owens, Lee Evans, Chris Cooley - welcome to the bench.

Broncos Take Undefeated Record To San Diego

When this season started, not many people thought the Denver Broncos would be a very good team. They have a first year coach in Josh McDaniels, that nobody really knew anything about until recently. They traded their All-Pro quarterback Jay Cutler. And their top receiver Brandon Marshall was throwing temper tantrums, forcing the Broncos to suspend him before the season.

Things didn't look so good for the Broncos before the season, but at Week 6 the team is sitting at 5-0 and in sole position of first place in the AFC West. San Diego has taken a different road this season. The Chargers are sitting at 2-2 and haven't yet seen the production they are use to from running back LaDainian Tomlinson and linebacker Shawne Merriman. If the Chargers hope to turn their season around, or jump start it if you will, they need to get production from those two. Two years ago, Tomlinson and Merriman were easily the best players at their position, however injuries have limited their production since then.

It's hard to think that with as much talent as the Chargers have, they are sitting at 2-2 right now. This team is a much better team than they are showing right now, and I expect them to get it going soon. I like the Chargers to give the Broncos their first loss of the season tonight and jumpstart their season on national television.

NFL Week 6 Is Here Already

Can you believe that it is already week 6 in the NFL season? With week 6 comes the trade deadline. The Chicago Bears acquired Gaines Adams from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2010 draft pick. Adams has been a disappointment in Tampa after being the No. 4 overall pick in the 2007 draft. Maybe a change of scenery is just what Adams needs to get his career back on track. His new team takes on the Atlanta Falcons tonight - making it the Knox Animal game of the day. The Bears, led by Jay Cutler travel to take on Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Both teams are 3-1 and both teams are considered two of the NFC's best. Tonight we will find out who is better.

Oklahoma vs. Texas and USC vs. Notre Dame Highlight Day of Games

When looking over the games this week, there are two matchups that stand out. The thing about these two games are that they are always exciting every season no matter what each team's record may be. Oklahoma and Texas take part in the Red River Rivalry every year at a neutral site, The Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. There is no fancy name for the matchup between USC and Notre Dame, but there is every bit a rivalry there. This year, freshman Matt Barkley leads his USC team into South Bend, Indiana to take on the Fighting Irish. I don't know about you, but those are two games that I am not going to miss.

Chris Samuels May Have To Retire

When Washington Redskins tackle Chris Samuels left the field injured last Sunday in the Redskins 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers, few thought that it could be the last time we could see the six-time Pro Bowler play football. He is in danger of missing the rest of the season and some reports are swirling around that he may not ever play in the NFL again.

Samuels suffered a stinger during that game and he already suffers from stenosis, a narrowing of the spine that causes him to wear a neck brace for extra protection when he plays. Add to that, his history of knee problems that he has continued to battle through are starting to wear the 32-year old down.

According to ESPN.com, Redskins coach Jim Zorn told The Post that the injury is possibly more severe than they originally thought.
"I think it is concerning, because we care about his health," Zorn told The Post. "Because of the other doctors involved in trying to read this thing, it's the time that it's taking to get any answers -- that's what's hard. We just have to wait it out.
"But we're going to think very positive about this situation. I think he is as well. He's got an excellent attitude towards the waiting. That's the frustrating part, is just waiting for the results."

It is obvious that Samuels is not the Pro-Bowl caliber player that he once was. However, it is a shame that he may not ever play an NFL snap again.

Ochocinco Wrote A Book

Chad Ochocinco is releasing a book in case anybody cares. The book is going to be titled "Ochocinco" - shocker i know. The book will feature a variety of topics ranging from the Cincinnati Bengals organization to relationships with women.

The book isn't expected to be released for another month, but as usual somebody got their hands on an advanced copy. In the book, Ochocinco criticizes the Bengals for not spending enough money to keep former players around and build a winning team.

He says: "We don't have a general manager. We have the fewest scouts in the league. Yeah, we have some great players, like me, Carson Palmer, T.J. (Houshmandzadeh, now in Seattle), Levi Jones (now a free agent), Stacy Andrews (now in Philadelphia). But we need more. We need to keep more of the guys we have, like Justin Smith (signed by San Francisco in 2008) and guys like that. Every time we start to make progress, we go backward. We have Willie Anderson playing and we let him go over a little bit of money."
He also doesn't shy away from criticizing team president and owner Mike Brown.

"Mike Brown doesn't have any real help, he doesn't have enough help. He doesn't trust anybody to tell him, 'Hey, we gotta change this.' Marvin Lewis wants to help, but all Mike does is tell him to coach. ... We need to get real help. I've been here eight years. I've seen it with my own eyes. I've seen how it works. After a while, you start to see where the problems are and you say to yourself, 'What can I really do?' At a certain point, it's out of your hands."
Needless to say, this book is going to cause a lot of contoversy in the Bengals clubhouse. Ochocinco wanted out of Cinci last season, so there had to be reasons. This book apparently goes into those reasons. Don't expect this to be the last time you hear about this book.

Pittsburgh Set To Invade New Jersey

Bill Stull leads a Pittsburgh offense into Piscataway, NJ to take on Rutgers tonight. Pittsburgh (5-1, 2-0) is sitting at the top of the Big East along with Cincinatti as the conferences only unbeatens - the Panthers would like to keep it that way. Rutgers (4-1, 0-1) would like to notch its first conference win of the year and doing it tonight would be ideal for the Scarlett Knights.

Stull leads a very balanced Pittsburgh offensive attack. The senior quarterback has thrown for 1,256 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year, but the Panthers are just as effective on the ground. Freshman Dion Lewis leads the team with 738 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Senior tight end Dorin Dickerson remains the teams biggest red zone threat - catching 21 passes for 232 yards and seven touchdowns.

Rutgers will rely heavily on running back Jay Martinek tonight. The junior has 411 yards on 75 carries and five touchdowns on the year. Coming off a 42-0 win over Texas Southern, Martinek had two touchdowns on eight carries for 51 yards. Junior Jourdan Brooks will also be involved in short-yardage situations as the 6-foot-1, 230 pound back has 236 yards and four touchdowns on 51 carries this season.

Pittsburgh is favored by six, and I think the Panthers will invade New Jersey and come out with a win.

As the two men get to know each other, he becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand. Couldn't they have come up with a better movie title than The Stepfather? What a dumb title and should surely be a clue that this movie is going to be just another teen-horror flick.

Pike Leads Bearcats Into South Florida

In a matchup of unbeatens, Cincinnati's Tony Pike looks to put together another dominating performance through the air to keep the No. 8 Bearcats that way. Their opponent No. 21 South Florida may have other plans.

Pike has the Cincinnati offense rolling as he has thrown for 1,493 yards, 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions. His top target Marshawn Gilyard has 38 catches for 517 yards and seven touchdowns on the year. Meanwhile, South Florida possesses one of the most dangerous defenses in college football and they have been especially hard on the passing games of their opponents. The Bulls have forced seven interceptions on the year.

Cincinnati ranks third in the country in scoring with 43.2 points per game and have the 11th best offense with 468.2 yards of total offense per game. However, going against the Bulls defense could be an entirely different story. South Florida ranks third in the nation in forced turnovers with 16, fifth in scoring defense with 9.4 points per game and 10th in total yards allowed with 263 yards per game.

Offensively, South Florida is led by freshman quarterback B.J. Daniels, who has started two games since senior Matt Grothe suffered a season-ending knee injury. Daniels has appeared in all five of South Florida's games, passing for six TDs while getting picked off twice. While not having Grothe in the lineup hurts South Florida, Daniels has proven to be a very capable quarterback in his absence.

Cincinnati is favored by 3 in Vegas, but this game could go either way. The Bearcats have the offense, the Bulls have the defense - making for what should be an incredible game.

Big Conferences Want Tulsa To Win

Many people are hoping for an upset when No. 5 Boise State travels takes on Tulsa tonight away from the blue turf. Not only is Boise State in position for a solid BCS game, but they are even in position for, gasp, the National Championship game if they have an undefeated season. I don't know of anybody outside of Boise, Idaho, WAC or any other small conference that would want this to happen. All that can be avoided if Tulsa can pull off one of the biggest upsets of the year on National television.

Boise State's most impressive victory came in Week 1 when they devastated Oregon 19-8. Many thought that was the only challenging game on the Boise schedule this season. When they beat the Ducks, it became apparent that their chances for an undefeated season are very possible.

Boise State comes into this matchup averaging 191.6 yards on the ground per game behind running backs Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin. Avery getting the bulk of the carries has 441 yards and one touchdown, while Martin has 284 yards and three touchdowns. Both backs average more than six yards per carry.

Kellen Moore leads the passing attack for Boise with 1,217 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year. He has a 69.2 completion percentage and has only thrown two interceptions this season. His accuracy and lack of turning the ball over speaks volumes as to why Boise has one of the most productive offenses in the nation. However, being in the WAC, they will be criticized because of their week schedule - and they should be.

Tulsa is another small conference school that is looking to make a name for themself. The former WAC member and current Conference USA representee is led by quarterback G.J. Kinne, who ranks seventh in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a 161.7 passer rating and has thrown for 1,142 yards with 10 touchdowns to only two interceptions.

Boise State is favored by 10 in this game and rightfully so, but if their is an upset possibility left on the Boise State schedule, this is it. If the Broncos can escape this game with a win, they will almost certainly go undefeated this season, meaning a big conference school will be missing out on a bowl game.

From Walk On To Leader: The Nick Reveiz Story

As I walked up to the weight facility at Farragut High School in the summer of 2005, there were a handful of players leftover from an early morning workout. Senior Nick Reveiz was one of them.

After watching Reveiz take some extra reps on the bench press, the determination was evident – this guy was for real. He was putting the work in to become a winner and the only way he knew to do it was to work hard.

During that season, Reveiz stood out in nearly every game. Making tackles, breaking up passes - the guy was all over the field. After the season, he was Class 5A All-State and Mr. Football finalist at lineman position. He was All-PrepXtra linebacker by Knoxville News Sentinel and All-Knoxville Interscholastic League after tallying more than 130 tackles throughout the year. He made a name for himself. However, being barely 5’9”, he was overlooked by many colleges. He didn’t care; he wanted to play for the Vols.

Still without an offer from the University of Tennessee after the season, Reveiz didn’t care – he was going to play for the Vols. His father Fuad Reveiz starred for the Vols as a kicker in the early 80’s. Nick grew up his entire life wanting to play for the Vols, and he was determined to do so. He was invited to walk-on at the University of Tennessee.

After standing out in camp, the weight room and on the practice field, Reveiz was hard to be ignored. It was going to be hard for this guy not to be on the field. He was redshirted in 2006, but Reveiz saw that as an opportunity to improve. He got stronger, smarter and in 2007, Reveiz began to see game time action as a special teamer as a redshirt freshman. He appeared in 14 games and recorded 15 tackles, 10 solo. In 2008, he continued to standout on special teams and recorded his first start against Northern Illinois, where he recorded four tackles. His hard work was beginning to pay off. But going into his junior season and having to impress an entirely new coaching staff, Reveiz had his work cut out for him yet again.

Reveiz continued to shine and impressed new head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff. He earned the starting middle linebacker job in the spring and carried it into this season. Reveiz became a captain and at middle linebacker became a very respected part of the Vols defense.

Reveiz started the first four games of the season for the Vols, before suffering a season ending knee injury against Ohio. Reveiz was devastated and so were the Vols. The linebacker finished the shortened season with 27 total tackles, but his impact goes beyond that. Reveiz was a leader both on and off the field.

The junior is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair his injured knee later this week. He wanted to have his surgery in Knoxville to remain as close to his team as possible. Even though Reveiz is not on the field with the Vols, he is still a very integral part of the team. Pre-game speeches, mentoring now starting middle linebacker Savion Frasier has become his mission. He wants the best for the Vols always, so if he is unable to be on the field, he is definitely going to be on the sidelines doing whatever he can to improve the team. He is one of a kind and his attitude is infectious.

Before the Vols game last week against Georgia, Reveiz stood before his team and spoke. His words helped inspire the Vols to play their best game of the year and dominate Georgia en route to a 45-19 win. It’s not often that a former walk-on has this much impact on a team, but Reveiz is anything but ordinary. Yet again, he faces another challenge after his surgery this week. And again, he will work his ass off to get back onto the playing field. When he makes it back next year, his senior season, he will continue to be heard. In the meantime he will continue to represent the University of Tennessee to the best of his ability. On or off the field, Nick Reveiz exemplifies what it means to be a Tennessee Volunteer.

Frank Goodin Stars on Tuesday Night Football!

Arkansas State at Louisiana-Monroe rocks ESPN2 tonight as our Tuesday night football game this week. Arkansas State (1-3) is a two-point Vegas favorite tonight against Louisiana-Monroe (3-2). That seems a little odd to me considering that LM is the home team in this match-up.

Junior running back Frank Goodin leads LM with 461 yards on 81 carries this season. He has scored eight touchdowns for the Warhawks, who are averaging 208.6 yards on the ground as a team - good for 15th in the country. With an average of 418 yards of total offense, they are ranked 32 in the country.

Arkansas State's overall numbers are a bit more modest as they average an 83rd best 342.8 yards of total offense.

This Sun-Belt match-up could be big for Arkansas State if they can pull off the win. LM is 2-0 in conference play, where Arkansas State is 0-1.

Congratulations Jonathan Crompton

Let me be the first to say congratulations Jonathan Crompton for being named the SEC offensive player of the week. Crompton led the Vols to a brilliant 45-19 win over Georgia Saturday at Neyland Stadium. The senior threw for a career-high 310 yards on 20-for-27 passing and four touchdowns. His lone interception was due to a terrible receiver play by freshman Zach Rogers - who let the ball hit his hands.

Crompton has struggled mightily during his Tennessee career and has experienced criticism throughout from fans, media and everybody else under the sun. He received death threats, but he continued to shrug them off and work hard both in the film room and on the practice field. Needless to say, for the 6-foot-4, 228-pound Waynesboro, N.C. native, this honor was well deserved.

This season has been a very up and down season for Crompton. He started the year off brilliantly against first-year Division 1 opponent Western Kentucky. He then turned in his worst performance of the year in Week 2 loss to UCLA. Since then, he has been average at best - until the Georgia game. Against the Bulldogs, Crompton had the confidence and precision that he and the Vols have been looking for all season. So what changed? I don't know if that question can be answered with a legitimate reason. What I will say is that the Tennessee receivers made plays early in the game and that helped build Crompton's confidence to an all-time high.

Big plays by Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore enabled Crompton to be his best against Georgia. If the receivers continue to make plays, it's not unreasonable to think that more performances like this are around the corner. Let's face it, Crompton is never going to be able to lead an offense like Peyton Manning or Casey Clausen, but if players are making plays around him - he can be good enough. And good enough this week got him the SEC player of the week.

Eagles Rookie Maclin Has Arrived

Philadelphia Eagles rookie Jeremy Maclin has been non-existent so far this season. Prior to Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Maclin had six catches for 45 yards and no scores. Against the Buccaneers, Maclin exploded for six catches, 142 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Eagles (3-1) to a 33-14 win.

Maclin answered his critics big time this week, but it didn't hurt to have McNabb back in the starting lineup after missing three weeks with a broken rib. McNabb lit up the Bucs (0-5) defense with three touchdown passes and 264 yards on 16-of-21 passing.

With Maclin and DeSean Jackson, the Eagles possess two of the most electrifying downfield threats in the league. McNabb and Maclin seemed to click this week, so I would expect Maclin to get more chances and be more involved in the Eagles offensive plans. It will be interesting to see how Maclin and Jackson mesh in the offense, because their numbers were reversed this week. We are used to seeing big games from Jackson and no-show's from Maclin, but it was Jackson this week that had one catch. I suspect that the Eagles find a way to get both players very involved in the offense and that could be very troubling for opposing defenses.

Who The Hell Is Josh McDaniels?

When Josh McDaniels took the reigns of the Denver Broncos as their new head coach this past off-season, many questioned the hire. Among those people was former All-Pro quarterback Jay Cutler, who was subsequently shipped off to Chicago in exchange for average-ish quarterback Kyle Orton. Well apparently McDaniels knew what he was doing then and he knew what he was doing yesterday as his Broncos defeated the New England Patriots 20-17 in overtime to improve Denver's record to 5-0 on the year.

What makes it even sweeter for McDaniels is the fact that he spent eight years in the Patriots organization learning from Bill Belichick - the master. But for the 33-year old first year head coach, this win was just business as usual. It was all part of his plan to create a winner in Denver and his players believe in him.

McDaniels not only faced criticism during his first week on the job, but those same critics continued to doubt him up until the season began. Superstar receiver Brandon Marshall spent the majority of the off-season upset about his contract, he loafed during practice, McDaniels didn't budge and suspended Marshall. He kicked him out of practice for a week because of his attitude and told him to come back when his head was on straight. Marshall realized that this was a battle he wasn't going to win, so he came back the next week and took things seriously. He has performed admirably in the early going this season and the Broncos are winning.

For a 33-year-old first year coach, McDaniels knows what he is doing. He has his team rolling and he has turned Orton from a very average quarterback to a quarterback very capable of leading his team to victories. Orton has thrown seven touchdowns and 1,236 yards through the first five weeks of the season. While he will never be considered a great quarterback in this league, McDaniels has found a way to win with him. That is the mark of a good coach.

McDaniels came to Denver as a nobody, he is emerging as a very capable leader for the Denver Broncos. He had to work to earn the respect of the team and he stood his ground when confronted. He didn't budge and it is all paying off right now for the Broncos. McDaniels is making a name for himself with only five coached games behind him and one thing is for sure - nobody is asking themselves "who the hell is Josh McDaniels?" anymore...

New Faces Take Monday Night Spotlight

New York Jets first year coach Rex Ryan and rookie quarterback take center stage in a Monday night duel against the Miami Dolphins tonight. The Jets are 3-1, while the Dolphins are 1-3 in the 2009 season, but as we all know - It doesn't matter on Monday night.

The Jets have a new weapon at receiver in former Browns receiver Braylon Edwards to give rookie Mark Sanchez another big-time weapon. If Edwards can revive himself and return to the way he played in 2007, the Jets may just become one of the best teams in the AFC. Sanchez has played well early this season, but struggled last week against New Orleans by throwing three interceptions as the Jets lost their first game of the year. He will need to play better tonight in order for the Jets to get back to their winning ways against the Dolphins.

The Jets top receiver Jerricho Cotchery is listed as questionable with a late-week hamstring injury suffered in practice. He will be a game-time decision.

The Dolphins strength rests in the hands of their running game. With Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, the Dolphins have one of the best one-two punches int he NFL. Both receivers are capable of catching the ball out of the backfield to further problems for opposing defenses. The Dolphins are averaging a league-best 183 yards on the ground per game, so the Jets will need to contain those two if they want to win this game.

Peyton Manning Looks To Destroy Tennessee

Peyton Manning is treated like a God in Tennessee, but when the former University of Tennessee quarterback travels back to his alma mater state to take on the Titans, he may get a rude awakening. Manning leads his 4-0 Colts into 0-4 Tennessee. Many people believe that the Titans are a better team than their 0-4 record, but I'm not sure I really understand that logic. If you play four games and you lose all of them, I am pretty sure you aren't that good.

Tennessee has problems defensively and at the quarterback position. The loss of Albert Haynesworth has hurt the Titans defensively line greatly. When quarterback Kerry Collins has a great 2008 season, many people expected him to put up the same kind of numbers this year. Realistically that just wasn't going to happen. It will be interesting to see if the Titans give Vince Young more playing time in the coming weeks.

Manning and the Colts are playing like one of the best teams in the league, whereas the Titans are playing like one of the worst. Something has got to give for the Titans sooner or later, but it isn't going to happen tonight against the Colts.

Crompton Wakes Up, Destroys Georgia

Something happened in Knoxville today that hasn't really been seen against a quality opponent - senior quarterback Jonathan Crompton looked awesome. Crompton threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns to help Tennessee crush Georgia 45-19.

Up until this point, excluding the first game of the season against Western Kentucky, Crompton has looked like a fish out of water while guiding the Vols offense. Today he looked like he knew what he was doing, prompting many to ask, "Where the hell did this performance come from?"

Not only did the Vols win get the team back to .500 at 3-3, but it also give Vols and their fans hope for the rest of the season. If Crompton can string together a couple more performances like he had today, it isn't unreasonable to think that the Vols could finish the season quite well. But then again, we have seen more bad performances than good performances from the senior.

The SEC's leading rusher Montario Hardesty led the Vols on the ground with 97 yards on 20 carries. His biggest run of the day came on a 39-yard touchdown.

While this win doesn't mean everything is all fine and dandy in Vols land, however it does mean that there is hope and that Tennessee is headed in the right direction. With a bye next week, the Vols travel to No. 3 Alabama - not exactly an easy feat.

Team Big ooggie Ain't Got Nothing On Knox Animal

It's very obvious that Knox Animal (2-1-1) hasn't had its breakout game yet this season. Tom Brady and Drew Brees have been inconsistent, running backs Steven Jackson and Clinton Portis have been average at best, receivers Terrell Owens, Bernard Berrian, Lee Evans, Eddie Royal have been disappointing to say the least.

Something has got to give and it looks like this may be the week. With Brees and the Saints having a bye week, David Garrard gets the start and he has been putting up solid numbers. Portis finds himself in the starting lineup again, but he needs a breakout game against the Panthers to keep his starting role on Knox Animal. With Johnny Knox on a bye week and Jerricho Cotchery questionable with a hamstring injury, Evans and Berrian join Owens as the starting receivers. Chris Cooley remains as solid a starting tight end in the NFL and he remains in the lineup this week.

Big ooggie (2-2) brings solid players to the match-up, including the number one receiver this season in NY Giants' Steve Smith. However, this team should be no match for Knox Animal as KA gets its third win of the year.

Uga and Smokey Will Be A Dogfight

The Vols host rival Georgia today and it could actually be a good game. It could be a good game not because I think either team is particularly good, but because I feel that as bad as the Vols (2-3) are on offense they might be able to put up enough points against the Georgia (3-2) defense to keep the game close. The Tennessee defense can hold its own against the Bulldogs offense if they can keep sophomore receiver A.J. Green in check. Green is considered one of the top receivers in the country and could spell disaster against a Vols secondary that has been struggling.

If the Vols defense can put pressure on Georgia quarterback Joe Cox, he will make mistakes and give away a turnover or two. If they give Cox time, he will light them up. The Vols would like to get back to .500 with a win and Georgia does not want to fall to .500. This game could go either way, but it's hard to pick a team that's starting quarterback is Jonathan Crompton.

Nevada vs. La. Tech Does Not Excite Me

It's not often that I will say that I am not excited about a football game. I usually watch every game I can whether it is high school, college or pro. When I saw that Nevada will be hosting Louisiana Tech tonight, I can honestly say that I don't really care.

Nevada holds a 1-3 record and are 11 point favorites over the 2-2 La. Tech Bulldogs. The over/under is currently at 58 points, so it is predicted to be a high scoring game - which at least adds a little excitement. This gives me yet another reason to go see Couples Retreat tonight.

Couples Retreat Has To Be Good

Couples Retreat is a comedy centered around four couples who settle into a tropical-island resort for a vacation. While one of the couples is there to work on the marriage, the others fail to realize that participation in the resort's therapy sessions is not optional. Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Kristen Davis and Kristen Bell all star in this should-be-awesome movie.

Looking at previews and knowing all those people in this movie are pretty good, it's hard to see how this movie could fail. This is a must see movie as far as I'm concerned.

Adventures of Power

In his quest to become the world's greatest air-drummer, a small-town dreamer must overcome obstacles and ridicule to save the day.

Araya

This is a remake of the 1959 movie about an old natural salt mine located in a peninsula in northeastern Venezuela which was still, by 1959, being exploited manually five hundred years after its discovery by the Spanish. Margot Benacerraf captures in images, the life of the "salineros" and their archaic methods of work before their definite disappearance with the arrival of the industrial exploitation.

Bronson

A young man who was sentenced to 7 years on prison for robbing a post office ends up spending 30 years in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter ego, Charles Bronson.

The Damned United

A look at Brian Clough's 44-day reign as the coach of Leeds United. It's a soccer movie in case anybody is interested.

Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat

Tiffani and her friend Casey try to lure the gorgeous Zack with a phony online profile using the image of Tiffani's buff ex, Ryan... which works fine until the real Ryan shows up. This sounds like the worst movie in the history of the world.

High Powered Offenses Collide Tonight

When Missouri's Chase Daniel graduated last year, many thought that the Tigers' offensive production would take a plunge, but sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert made sure that wasn't the case.

Gabbert has been spectacular in this season's early going, throwing 11 touchdowns and no interceptions while racking up 1,161 yards in the air to help No. 24 Missouri to a 4-0 start this season. The Tigers are ranked ninth in the league in passing with 323.8 yards-per-game.

The Nebraska offense is centered around junior running back Roy Helu, who has 464 yards and five touchdowns on the year. His most impressive game came in the Cornhuskers only loss of the season to Virginia Tech where he rushed for 169 yards on 28 carries. Look for Helu to be a major factor in Nebraska's game plan tonight.

Both teams like to put up points as Missouri averages 36.8 points-per-game and No. 21 Nebraska averages 39.3 points-per-game. Missouri has won 23 of 27 home games and taken three straight over Nebraska at Faurot Field. Nebraska has lost seven in a row and 14 of 15 road games against ranked opponents. For this Big 12 matchup, it doesn't get any bigger than this for either team. This game could be the difference in making it to the Big 12 Championship Game. So as far as either team is concerned, this is their Big 12 Championship Game.

And The Unbeaten Team Smith Receives A Loss

In a shocking turn of events, Knox Animal won a fantasy game to improve its record to 2-1-1 on the year. Even more impressive, KA gave Team Smith (3-1) its first loss of the season by edging out the former league's No. 1 team 86-84.

Tom Brady was the player of the week for Knox Animal - earning 19 fantasy points. Chris Cooley and Johnny Knox also scored double digit points - solidifying their jobs as starters in the KA lineup.

Team Smith was hurt by Darren McFadden and Devin Hester, who each put up goose eggs. While both teams have seen better days, it was Knox Animal that came out on top of this one.

Cleveland Gets Rid Of Edwards Problem

It's not often you can say that it is a good move when a winless team gets rid of its best receiver, but for the Cleveland Browns you can say that it is a great move. The Browns have agreed to ship Braylon Edwards off to the New York Jets in exchange for special teamer Jason Trusnik, WR Chansi Stuckey and two draft picks that are believed to be a third and a fifth round.

Edwards had a breakout season with the Browns in 2007 and has been an extreme dissapointment the last two years. This season he has caught 10 passes for 139 yards. However, his biggest problems may be off the field as he has been linked to an incident this past Monday where he allegedly assaulted one of LeBron James' friends outside of a nightclub. This past March he was with Donte Stallworth the night Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian with his car. Last November, Edwards was fined and forced to do community service after being pulled over for driving 120 miles-per-hour.

While Edwards might have been the most talented member of the Browns offense, the distractions and underwhelming performances on the field make this a very smart move for the winless Cleveland team. If his head is on right, Edwards can be a big time player for the Jets and first year quarterback Mark Sanchez, but with all the baggage he brings, it could be a gamble. It appears to be a gamble that the Jets and Sanchez are both willing to take with open arms.

The holdout appears to be over for No. 10 overall pick Michael Crabtree and the San Francisco 49ers. Crabtree reportedly agreed to a six-year deal and is expected to join the 49ers by this weekend. The timetable is unclear on how soon we might see the receiver on the field in a real game situation, but at least Crabtree realized that sitting out a season isn't in his best interest.

The terms of the deal aren't yet clear, but reportedly the deal is for six years and if Crabtree meets certain expectations, the sixth year can be voided.

While Crabtree's skills can be a great asset to the 49ers (3-1), it is also obvious that the rookie has a lot of catching up to do. He sat out training camp, practices and workouts so only time will tell how long it will take Crabtree to get into the swing of things.

One thing that is clear is that it was a good idea for Crabtree to decide to sign. It would have been very stupid for him and his career to sit out this season and re-enter the 2010 NFL Draft. The best thing for him is to get on the field as fast as possible and show that he is a solid receiver in this league because until the results are shown on the field - he is a nobody as far as I'm concerned.

Dasher and MTSU Rock Tuesday Night Football

In a rare Tuesday night game, Middle Tennessee State University travels to Troy, Alabama to take on the Trojans. MTSU is led in passing and rushing by its junior quarterback Dwight Dasher. Dasher has thrown for 1,028 yards and rushed for 251 in MTSU's four games this season. He has 10 total touchdowns on the season.

It seems fairly simple is you want to stop the 3-1 Blue Raiders - Stop Dasher. If Troy (2-2) can do that, then it stands a good chance in this game. Troy's leading rusher, junior DuJuan Harris is averaging a whopping 2.8 yards per carry. That's hardly impressive for the team's number one offensive threat. It's quarterback junior, Levi Brown has thrown for 1,097 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions on the season.

It's hard to see why Troy is a seven point favorite in this game since MTSU looks like the better team at this point. Yes, Troy is the home team so that's good for a three point advantage. I like MTSU in this game. They have the better quarterback, they have beaten Maryland this season - I know that is not saying much since Maryland has been terrible every week except last when they beat Clemson, but it's still something considering MTSU lost to Clemson the first week of the season. MTSU has also logged wins against North Texas and Memphis. Troy has lost its first two games of the year to Bowling Green and Florida, then have won their last two against UAB and Arkansas State. MTSU has better wins this year and I expect them to beat Troy tonight.
