Quantcast

Melissa Summers was arrested at Clinton Middle School Thursday after police say she was trying to buy prescription drugs from a student according to WBIR. School officials learned a student had the drugs and another was sending text messages about it's availability.

'Catcher In The Rye' Author Dies

J.D. Salinger, the legendary author who wrote "The Catcher in the Rye" has died at the age of 91. He died of natural causes and he will be forever remembered as writing one of the best books ever.

"The Catcher in the Rye" was basically the first novel I read that I actually liked. It was on my summer reading list freshman year of high school and I was pleasantly surprised as I plunged through it. It was bold, daring and unlike any classic literary tale I had previously read. This was and always will be my favorite book of all time - and I know I am not the only one that feels that way.

MLB News and Notes

Twins Sign Jim Thome
The Twins have inked the 40-year-old Thome to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. He can earn an additional $700,000 in incentives. This is not a bad signing at all by the Twins. They get a power hitter with clubhouse experience for a cheap price. He hit .249 with 23 homers last year so he still has a little pop left in his bat. It is likely he will be in the lineup mostly as a DH. Thome has 564 homeruns in his career.

Athletics Sign Ben Sheets
Oakland signed pitcher Ben Sheets to a one-year, $10 million contract. He can possibly earn $12 million with incentives. The 31-year-old former Brewer was stellar early in his career, but injuries have plagued him the last few years. He sat out all of 2009 while recovering from elbow surgery. The A's must have liked what they saw last week in a bullpen session and it was enough to get the deal done. If Sheets can return to his old self, this could be one of the better signings of the offseason.

Tejada Returns To Orioles
Baltimore brought back Miguel Tejada with a one-year, $6 million contract. Tejada turns 36 this season and may be well past his prime as a MLB caliber player, but he is sure an upgrade offensively over what the Orioles had last season.

Tables will be available on a first come first served basis.

Peyton Back In Super Bowl

After a long but not long enough NFL season, we are down to our final two teams. The Indianapolis Colts will face off against the New Orleans Saints in two weeks at the Super Bowl. The Colts, winner of three Super Bowls take on a Saints team that has never made it to one. The last Super Bowl win for the Colts came in 1997 when they beat a Rex Grossman led Bears team 29-17.

Manning has his Colts rolling, but Brees and the Saints are playing very well also. On paper, you have got to give the edge to the Saints, but as we all know games are not played on paper and you can never count out Manning. If I was a betting man, I would bet on the 6'5" quarterback with a laser-rocket-arm.

NFL Championship Week Picks

New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts
3:00 p.m. ET CBS

Peyton Manning and his Colts host a surprising Jets team that has one of the most dominating defenses in the league. Led by the best cornerback in the league, Darelle Revis, the Jets will try to limit the best quarterback in the league, Manning. The Colts will go as far as Manning can lead them and if I was a betting man, I wouldn't bet against him.

Knox Animal Pick: Colts

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
6:40 p.m. ET FOX

Brett Favre and company invade the Superdome to take on the Saints in the second game of the day. Favre has his team rolling and on the other side Drew Brees and the Saints are tough to beat at home. Both teams are use to playing in domes, so the home-field advantage may not be as great as it usually is for the Saints in this one.

Dear Keith Brooking: Shut Your Mouth

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking took offense to Minnesota's late touchdown in the fourth quarter of the Vikings 34-3 win over the Cowboys Sunday. It was Brett Favre's fourth touchdown pass on a fourth-and-two to Visanthe Shiancoe that caused the 34-year-old veteran linebacker to approach the Vikings sideline like a rabid animal. But seriously Brooking, what the hell is your deal?

The Vikings absolutely dominated the Cowboys defense all day. Favre threw four touchdowns on the day and made the Cowboys look foolish the entire game. Why would that stop at the end of the game. The offense's job is to score touchdowns and the defense's job is to stop other team from scoring touchdowns. If Brooking had a problem with the Vikings scoring touchdowns late in the game, why didn't he and his teammates do a better job of preventing them?

There is no such thing as running the score up in the NFL. These are professionals and they have a job to do. So before you look like a moron and verbally assault the other team for doing their job, make sure you are doing your job first.

Allen Says Limit Fans All-Star Voting Role

Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen says that fans should be limited in their roles for voting NBA All-Stars. This is a direct result of fans voting both Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson All-Star game starters. Both former stars are still getting the votes even though their play has not been All-Star caliber this season. McGrady has only appeared in six games this season and Iverson has only played in 17.

It's hard to disagree with Allen here. The Celtics guard said he would like to see fans get 50 percent of the vote and the other half divided evenly between media and players. According to espn.com, Allen said, "I like the fact that the fans get the opportunity to vote and pick who they'd like to see in the All-Star Game, but I don't think it should be 100 percent."

Shit, I'm all for it. You might as well make Allen the NBA commissioner while we are making changes to the way the NBA is run.

Bears DE Gaines Adams Dies

We are saddened to report that Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning of cardiac arrest. The 26 year-old reportedly went into cardiac arrest early sunday morning and an autopsy later revealed that he died of an enlarged heart, which often leads to a heart attack.

Adams was drafted fourth overall in the 2007 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This past season he was dealt to the Bears. In 47 career games, he had 61 tackles and 13.5 sacks. As a college player at Clemson he is tied with Michael Dean Perry as the school's all time sack leader with 28. He was known as a bright young player with a lot of potential.

NFL Divisional Playoff Picks - Sunday

Dallas at Minnesota
1:00 p.m. FOX

The Cowboys are the hottest team right now. The Vikings have been the best team all season. This has the makings of a great game. Minnesota will need to establish its running game with Adrian Peterson. Favre has magic, but he doesn't have enough to do it alone. The Vikings defense will have its hands full. Covering Jason Witten will be the key if the Vikings want to keep this season going.

Knox Animal Pick: Minnesota

NY Jets at San Diego
4:40 p.m. CBS

San Diego is one of the most underrated teams this year. They have been solid throughout and they will try to knock off one of the AFC's hottest teams. The Jets have had an up and down year, but have been impressive as of late. Cornerback Darelle Revis is the best I have ever seen and he will blanket whoever he is matched up against. If rookie Mark Sanchez can limit his turnovers, the Jets will have a good shot at winning this one.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Picks - Saturday

Arizona at New Orleans
4:30 p.m. FOX

This could be Kurt Warner's last game. The veteran quarterback has hinted that he is on the verge of retiring and his team would like to get him one more championship. Similar to the way Jerome Bettis went out with a championship as a Steeler, Warner hopes to do the same as a Cardinal. New Orleans has been overrated in my eyes all season, but they are tough to beat in the dome.

Knox Animal Pick: Arizona

Baltimore at Indianapolis
8:15 p.m. CBS

This game depends 100% on Peyton Manning. The Colts need their gun-slinger to have a hell of a game to get past Ray Rice and the surging Ravens. The Colts are not as good as their record and without Manning, they wouldn't have made the playoffs by a long shot. If Baltimore can slow Manning down and force a couple turnovers, the Ravens should knock off the Cots.

Vols Found Their Guy: Derek Dooley

The University of Tennessee Volunteers have reportedly hired Derek Dooley as their next head coach. He was 4-8 last season at Louisiana Tech and is 17-20 in his career. I can't say I know much about Dooley, but here is what I do know:
  • 1996 - Graduate Assistant at Georgia
  • 1997-1999 - Wide Receivers Coach SMU
  • 2000-2002 - Tight End and Recruiting Coordinator LSU
  • 2003-2004 - Running Back and Special Teams coach LSU
  • 2005-2006 - Tight Ends Coach Miami Dolphins
  • 2007-2009 - Head Coach Louisiana Tech
It's hard to see now how this hire will turn out, but right now it looks like a huge gamble. Not much is known about Dooley and I'm fairly certain this is not the big splash that Vols fans were looking for. That can all change however, if a solid staff is hired to recruit and back him up. If he can pull together a solid staff and try to salvage as much of this recruiting class as he can, it might not be a bad hire at all. As for me, I'm not sure what to think about this hire. There are a lot of unknowns right now and the roll of the dice hire is not what Tennessee fans are looking for. But then again, everything is a roll of the dice hire - example Lane Kiffin.

Arenas Faces Felony Gun Charges, Jail Time

Washington Wizards guard and gun fanatic Gilbert Arenas has been charged with felony gun possession after the locker room incident that occurred last month. He has been charged with carrying a firearm outside of his home without a license. According to reports, he could face up to five years in prison.

Well, he should go to jail. Arenas claims that he didn't know it was illegal to carry weapons into the locker room. I don't know how many businesses allow their employees to carry weapons on site, but the NBA is obviously not one of them. So he should go to jail just for being that dumb.

Arenas has been a disappointment since signing an enormous six-year, $111 million contract. He has played in only 34 games since signing the contract because of a knee injury and the guns-related suspension. It looks like the Wizards are going to be getting some money back.

Phil Fulmer's Statement On Lane Kiffin

Former University of Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer released the following statement about Lane Kiffin and the current state of the program. The statement was released through CBS, the network that he currently does analysis work for.

"Over the last 24 hours I have been contacted by friends, great fans and media members, and I feel it is important to comment, as a man who loves the University of Tennessee deeply and shares this love with millions of great Volunteer fans and friends. Recent events have been painful and an embarrassment to all of us who care about UT. I love the University; I am loyal to my alma mater and am ready to help as the University makes one of the most important decisions in the history of our football program. However, to prevent any misunderstanding, I am not seeking to be a candidate for the head coaching position. I am looking forward to embracing the next coach and have some strong beliefs about the kind of man he should be. He must embrace Tennessee's culture and traditions, be mature and of good character, and demonstrate integrity and leadership to our young men who desperately want to be shown the way.  He must deserve, earn and keep the trust of our young men -- both present and future. Tennessee football has been successful for so many years because it has been rooted in values and traditions. We can't take those values for granted – if we do not guard them carefully, we will lose them." - Phil Fulmer

Will Muschamp Staying In Texas

Sources close to University of Texas are reporting that defensive coordinator and head coach in waiting has declined to be the next head coach at the University of Tennessee. The sources cited that Muschamp's family did not want to leave Austin and staying with the Longhorns was the best decision for him and his family.

The Vols offer was reportedly for seven years worth $21 million with no buy out for University of Texas or University of Georgia.

It would have been a long shot if Vols athletic director Mike Hamilton was able to lure Hamilton away from Texas, but many thought it could have happened. Nobody knows how long Mack Brown will continue to be the head coach at Texas, so Muschamp could be waiting a while. If Muschamp wanted a top notch job now, this was it. He obviously doesn't mind waiting his turn in Austin.

Lane Kiffin Is A Douche

Tennessee's Lane Kiffin has agreed in principle to become the next head coach at Southern California, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Chris Low on Tuesday.

Well, if this doesn't piss off people of the big orange nation, I don't know what will. Kiffin not only is leaving the Vols, but he is also taking his father and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron with him. Newly hired receivers coach Kippy Brown will be named the interim head coach for the Vols.

This just goes to show you that contracts and trust do not exist in sports. The days of Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno are long gone. Every job is a stepping stone and assholes will be assholes.

NFL Wild-Card Weekend Picks: January 10

Baltimore at New England
1:00 p.m. ET CBS

Belichick's boys have struggled at time this season. Tom Brady has been solid for the most part, but still is not back to being where he was before the injuries. He is now nursing "broken ribs", which came up in the news this week when Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis said that he and the Patriots are bluffing about the injury. The Ravens will bring all they have after Brady, but the question is will it be enough.

Knox Animal Pick: Baltimore

Green Bay at Arizona
4:40 p.m. ET FOX

Arizona has been relatively steady this season. Their high powered offense can put points on the board, but Green Bay is solid. The Packers have a lot to prove and so does quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He will forever be compared to Brett Favre in Green Bay and how great would it be if he had the opportunity to face-off again the legend later on in the playoffs? This is one of the more intriguing games of the Wild-Card Weekend.

NFL Wildcard Weekend Picks: Saturday, January 9

New York Jets at Cincinnati Bengals
4:30 p.m. NBC

It's a rematch of last week's game between the two teams. Prior to the last game, Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco opened his mouth about being able to have a big game against Jets badass corner Darelle Revis. That did not happen. If the Bengals want to have any chance in this game, they will need a few big plays from Ochocinco.

Knox Animal Pick: New York Jets

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys
8:00 p.m. NBC

Another rematch from last week and I have a feeling this one will turn out differently and here is why. Last week, the Cowboys dominated the Eagles because Philly dumbed down their schemes so they wouldn't be giving anything away. This week, the Eagles will want revenge and will definitely look a lot better than last week. In addition to that, you need to think about the Cowboys past postseason struggles and you gotta think that the Eagles will win this game. Everybody is picking the Cowboys, that is exactly why I am not.

Whether you are a fan of the BCS or simply hate it - the current system worked this year. These are the two best teams this year and they should be the teams playing for the National Championship. As Expected, The Redskins Hire Shanahan

The Washington Redskins have hired Mike Shanahan to be their next head coach. When GM Bruce Allen was hired, it was obvious that he was intent on doing everything in his power to turn the pitiful Redskins franchise around. Step one was to find the leader, and Shanahan was the chosen one.

The contract is reportedly worth approximately $7 million a year for five years. Shanahan's son, Kyle Shanahan (former Houston OC) will be the Redskins offensive coordinator. Both are known as offensive guru's but they will have their work cut out for them with this team that has struggled particularly on that side of the ball.

Shanahan's career regular-season record is 146-98, including 138-86 with the Broncos from 1995 to 2008 and 8-12 with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1988-89. His playoff record is 8-5. If Shanahan can turn this team around, he will go down as one of the best coaches ever.

Big Unit Retires After 22 Seasons

Randy "The Big Unit" Johnson announced his retirement on a conference call Tuesday evening, bringing an end to his impressive 22-year career. Johnson was a five-time Cy Young Award winner and 10-time All-Star during the span. He threw two no-hitters, including a perfect game, and ranks second on the career strikeout list with 4,875. The 6-foot-10 southpaw finished his career with a record of 303-166.

Johnson is going to be missed in the baseball world, but at 46-years old - it was his time to say goodbye. Injuries, mainly back and shoulder problems plagued Johnson the last few years, and last season's rotator cuff surgery may have been the deciding factor. Johnson will be remembered as one of the most feared and dominant pitchers to ever play the game. I know he really wanted that strikeout record of 5,714 held by Nolan Ryan, but being second is nothing for him to be bummed about. As awkward as the string-bean giant looked on the mound with his shaggy mullet protruding from his hat, he will go down as one of the greatest pitchers to ever step on the mound.

Redskins Finally Fire Jim Zorn

Everybody knew it was only a matter of time that Redskins head coach Jim Zorn would be canned. When owner Daniel Snyder brought in new GM Bruce Allen, it was even clearer that the 'Skins would be heading in a new direction. It all starts with Zorn, who was 12-20 in his two years as the team's coach.

Now that Zorn is gone, the 'Skins are going to move fast in finding a new head coach. Former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan appears to be the front-runner in Snyder's coaching wish list, but nobody knows if they will be able to ink the coaching legend to a deal. Frankly, I don't see why Shanahan would come into such a lousy coaching situation. The guy has nothing left to prove and the 'Skins are in some drastic need of help - meaning it would not be an easy task.

Four Vol Ballers Suspended

What do you do when you just beat Memphis 66-59 the night before? Well, if you are senior Tyler Smith, sophomore Cameron Tatum and juniors Brian Williams and Melvin Goins you get arrested.

The four were traveling on I-40 in Knoxville when Tatum was pulled over for speeding. The officer smelled marijuana and found a gun with an altered serial number, forcing him to arrest the four University of Tennessee basketball players according to Knoxnews.com. All four face misdemeanor drug and weapon charges.

The four Vols have been suspended indefinitely by Vols coach Bruce Pearl. With four players, gone that is basically 25% of the team, which is a pretty damn significant part for the No. 14 ranked Vols. Also, Smith is trying to prove that he is actually talented enough to get drafted into the NBA, so for a player on the bubble - this could be a problem. But, seriously all ramifications aside, why the hell did these players need a gun? All they have to do is go to class and play basketball - Knoxville is not that dangerous of a place.

NCAA Football Bowl Picks: January 2

INTERNATIONAL BOWL
South Florida vs. Northern Illinois
12:00 p.m. ET ESPN2

Knox Animal Pick: South Florida

AT&T COTTON BOWL
No. 19 Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss
2:00 p.m. ET FOX

Ole Miss was a disappointing team this season. Quarterback Jevan Snead was supposed to be all world and he was pathetic this year. As much of a letdown this team was throughout the year, I think they pull it together and beat Oklahoma State in this year's Cotton Bowl that is actually being played at Cowboys Stadium.

Knox Animal Pick: Ole Miss

PAPAJOHNS.COM BOWL
South Carolina vs. Connecticut
2:00 p.m. ET ESPN

Gotta go with the SEC on this one.

Knox Animal Pick: South Carolina

AUTOZONE LIBERTY BOWL
Arkansas vs. East Carolina
5:30 p.m. ET ESPN

Ryan Mallett will light up the East Carolina secondary.

Knox Animal Pick: Arkansas

VALERO ALAMO BOWL
Michigan State vs. Texas Tech
9:00 p.m. ET ESPN

As much distraction Texas Tech has had over the last week tells me that they will not be able to overcome the adversity in this game. You can probably make a drinking game out of the amount of times they will talk about Mike Leach in this game.

Knox Animal Pick: Michigan State

NCAA Football Bowl Picks: January 1

OUTBACK BOWL
Northwestern vs. Auburn
11:00 a.m. ET ESPN

One of those bowl games that is supposed to be good, but it's before noon so I will be way too tired to fully enjoy it.

Knox Animal Pick: Auburn

CAPITAL ONE BOWL
No. 13 Penn State vs. No. 12 LSU
1:00 p.m. ET ABC

LSU better come to play because Penn State is a really good team. If the Tigers can perform the way they are capable of playing they shouldn't have any problems. But, if they struggle - Penn State will capitalize.

Knox Animal Pick: LSU

KONICA MINOLTA GATOR BOWL
No. 16 West Virginia vs. Florida State
1:00 p.m. ET CBS

The Seminoles will try to send Bobby Bowden out with a win. It will be tough, but it wouldn't be fitting if one of the coaching legends ends his career with a win.

Knox Animal Pick: Florida State

ROSE BOWL PRESENTED BY CITI
No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 7 Oregon
4:30 p.m. ET ABC

In one of the most glorified bowls, we have ourselves an outstanding matchup. Can Terrell Pryor lead the Buckeyes to a big bowl win? I'm still not sold that he can.

Knox Animal Pick: Oregon

ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL
No. 5 Florida vs. No. 3 Cincinnati
8:30 p.m. ET FOX

Tim Tebow's last game and Urban Meyer's last game for a while give plenty of reason to expect the Gators to roll over the head coachless Bearcats.

Knox Animal Pick: Florida
