Today I went to the gym for the first time in about a week and half. It was definitely nice to get a good workout in. I was scheduled to do the back/tricep workout of my new three-day split, but my back was a little tight. I opted to switch my Monday workout with my Wednesday chest/bicep day.
It was definitely a good workout and I was drained by the end of it. Chest is always my most challenging workout, so my hope is to get a lot stronger in that area with the new split. I have never enjoyed working chest as much as everything else, so finding the motivation to push is always a challenge. However, today I had a great workout and it was a good first day back in the gym.

My Journey: Day 56
As I prepare for my new workout routine this coming week, I am pretty excited. It's been a little bit since I have been in the gym, so I'm going to take it slow to begin with. It will definitely be interesting to see how my energy levels are in the gym, but right now I'm expecting to have good workouts.
The other aspect is going to be my diet. I need to get back on track with what I am eating and it started today at the grocery store. I planned out and bought my meals for the week, so as long as I stick to that I should be fine. It should be a good week.

My Journey: Day 55
This week I have added skim milk back into my diet. Growing up milk was always a vital part of my diet. Throughout college, I went through six gallons of milk a week. The reason I cut back was that I was consuming way too many calories. In an attempt to control the calories, I have limited myself to 16 oz. a day - usually a glass with lunch and another with dinner. The benefits of milk are amazing and I am very glad to have it back in my diet.

My Journey: Day 54
Despite not working out since Tuesday, February 15, I still managed to keep the weight going down. I weighed in this morning at 279.6 lbs., so down from the 283.6 lbs. from two weeks ago. It goes to show you how important watching calories is to a diet and one's fitness goals.

My Journey: Day 53
With my new workout plan in place for next week, I can't wait to start it. However, this week is all about getting used to having a baby around the house. The dogs have adjusted and my wife and I are getting more comfortable each day. Even though I haven't worked out in a little over a week, I have been somewhat watching my calories to make sure I don't gain any weight. I will be weighing in tomorrow morning, so it could be very interesting to see what the scale says in the a.m..

My Journey: Day 52
Each day I am getting more comfortable with the 'being a dad thing'. It is definitely a learning experience, but I'm just soaking it in and trying to be the best dad I can be right now. My kid and my wife definitely come first in my life and that is why I am taking my time getting back to the gym. With that being said, I have come up with a plan for the first couple of weeks back to the gym.
I plan on doing a three-day split on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is to get me used to being back in the gym and giving me two days off during the week as well. I'm not sure how long this will last, or if I will even like it, but I'm giving it a shot. It is detailed below:
Monday - Back/Triceps
Bent Rows
Deadlifts
Wide Grip Pulldowns
V-Bar Pressdowns
One-Arm Tricep Extensions
One of these (Seated Dip, Overhead Tricep Extensions, Close Grip Bench Press)
Wednesday - Chest/Biceps
Chest Press
Incline Chest Press
Pullovers
Flyes
Bar Curl
Dumbbell Curl
Hammer Curl
Friday - Legs/Shoulders
Squats
Leg Press
Seated Calf Raises
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls
Standing Calf Raises
Military Press
Lateral Raises
Shrugs

My Journey: Day 51
It was back to work today. Because of that, the day seemed like it was never going to end. My eating schedule was off and didn't get a bite of food before lunch. I always make sure to eat breakfast, but today I completely forgot about it until after I was at work.
In addition to my diet, my workouts have been on my mind a lot lately. I am contemplating different splits and various routines, but am still undecided on how I want to approach this when I make it back to the gym next week.

Cam Newton Is Ready To Play
Say what you want about Cam Newton, the former Auburn star and Heisman trophy winner. The fact of the matter is that this guy is good. He put up incredible numbers, he has the intangibles, and he is turning heads with his pre-combine workouts. Many thought that Newton wouldn't participate in the NFL combine, but he said he will be there.
"I don't have nothing to hide, and I'm a competitor," Newton said Monday night before accepting the Davey O'Brien Award that recognizes the nation's top quarterback. "I'm going to go out here and do what I've been working on this whole time and preparing for this moment right now." - Cam NewtonThe guy has faced scrutiny over the past year, and he has done nothing but prove people wrong. The guy is an athletic freak, and I think he will be very good at the next level. He is projected by many as a Top-10 pick in the NFL Draft.

My Journey: Day 50
There wasn't much going on fitness wise today. I was off work for President's day, so I caught up on some sleep on and off today. I'm headed back to work tomorrow and I have decided that I probably won't go back to the gym until next week. That should give me a couple days to figure out a new routine and possibly new training split.

My Journey: Day 49
One of the biggest things on my mind lately has been how I am going to find time to workout now that my new baby son is here. I know that being tired is now going to be an everyday occurrence in my life, but will I have the energy to muster up a solid workout? Or is sleep better for me at this point? These are the questions that have been running through my mind lately.
I am off work tomorrow for President's day. We have Caleb's first doctor appointment at 8:30 a.m., so I will definitely not be heading to the gym tomorrow morning. The plan is to do some light exercises around the house tomorrow. Maybe some crunches and pushups. It doesn't sound like much, but it will be enough to prime my body for when I do return to the gym. I don't know when that will be, but when I do get back there I will be excited.
My diet hasn't been bad over the past couple of days. I know for a fact that I have been under maintenance calories. I am definitely trying to monitor what I eat because I want to make sure that stays under control. Just because I am not hitting the gym in the early a.m. lately, doesn't mean that I am giving up on my goal of 265 lbs by my birthday, August 5. I will achieve my goals, no matter how I have to do it.

My Journey: Day 48
After a couple days of MIA, I am back to the blog. We have been adjusting to the new baby, but it is definitely going to take a little time to get a new routing going.
One of my friends from work stopped by today with some awesome food. My wife and I definitely appreciated that. To be honest, I haven't even thought to much about eating for the first time in my life, so if she hadn't stopped by with food, I don't know when or what I would have eaten. Later on my parents and my wife's mom stopped by with some more food after a couple grocery store runs. When today started, we didn't have any food, but now the fridge is packed.

After a weekend of relaxing and eating way too much, hitting the gym today wasn't easy. It was especially difficult because my back workout is one of my most grueling workouts in my training split. The back-to-back exercises of barbell bent rows and deadlifts completely wears me down. Today was no different. After those two exercises, I did wide-grip pulldowns and called it a day.

My Journey: Day 40
Today was a good day. I had a good shoulder workout this morning. Had lunch with a couple friends and had a great evening and night with my wife. I have a lot to be thankful for in this world and there is definitely no shortage of good people around me. For that I am truly blessed.
I weighed in a 283.6, which is basically the same as I was last week. After being sick and eating like crap, I am not surprised. At least I didn't gain any weight, so that is a positive. Next week may be more of the same, but I expect to be back in the groove of things as far as my diet is concerned by the week of February 21.

My Journey: Day 39
Today is the day I have been waiting for since I missed my leg workout last week. I hit the gym at the usual 5:30 a.m. and warmed up on the bike for a good five minutes. It was time for squats. I warmed up with 135x10 then did 225x10 and 225x6. I closed it with 275x5. With squats done, I followed it with the usual three sets of leg press. I did 270x10, 360x10 and 450x10. After those two workouts I was worn out. I then did seated calf raises, leg extensions, standing leg curls and called it a day.
It's always an awesome feeling after I complete my leg workout, so it was nice to be able to get it in this week. Next week, I will try and rep 275x10 on squats and add a little something to the leg press. I have been stuck at 450 for a while now. I'm not surprised since I do leg press after squats, but still I would like to get to 500.
Overall, my diet hasn't been too great as of late. We have been grabbing a lot of quick meals and it will probably be that way until after the baby is born and we can get into some type of routine. With that being said, I have been making better decisions than I have in the past regarding the food I consume. I still think I have done a reasonable job for the most part not going over my maintenance calories, but with the missed workouts at the end of last week and Monday due to the lingering effects of my cold, it's hard to say what the scale will say tomorrow morning.

Today was a good day. I woke up and was ready to go. I think I have officially kicked the cold that had plagued my life for the last week. At the gym I worked chest and it was pretty good. As usual I capped it off with a 30 minute cardio session on the elliptical. My energy level stayed pretty high throughout the entire time I was at the gym, so that's what I am most happy about today.

My Journey: Day 37
Today was back to business. After a good night's rest, I hit the gym at 5:30 a.m. and got a good workout in. Really, it was the first good workout in over a week, so I was very happy about it. Since I didn't go to the gym yesterday, I decided that I will go on Saturday to make up for it. So basically my workout schedule will be a day off this week.
I did my back workout today and it felt good to be back in the gym. I did bent rows, deadlifts, wide grip pulldowns and lower back extensions. I still wasn't 100%, so I was winded after deadlifts. I finished the workout off with 30 minutes on the elliptical.
Man, it was nice to be back in the gym...

I decided to take one more day off from the gym because I didn't get to bed until after midnight and needed the sleep. However, I will be doing a Saturday gym session this week to make up for it. Today was spent tentatively planning and preparing the week ahead. It's hard to prepare too far in advance right now because my wife is in the final stages of pregnancy and we don't know what is going to happen day-to-day. With that being said I am taking things one day at a time.

My Journey: Day 35
It's Super Bowl Sunday. This is a day where its always good to hang out with friends and watch the game. Even though my Redskins were far from making the big game, it's still one of those things that every fan looks forward to. In addition to the big game, didn't track all my food intake today, because I didn't know the nutrition values of everything I ate today. I didn't go overboard by any means, but I still ate some great party/tailgate food.
Tomorrow I am going to the gym and I am looking forward to getting my workouts back on track. The target is my normal back workout, but we will see how it goes after basically taking the week off last week. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to getting in there and throwing some weights around.

Despite not being in the gym and eating like crap the majority of the week, I was able to weigh in at 283.8 lbs. this morning. Not quite a pound loss from last week, but at least I didn't gain anything. So with as crappy of a week I had, I am still on target.

Once again, I slept in this morning and did not workout. I think it was beneficial because my throat feels fine now and all that really remains is congestion. The good thing about this whole situation is that my appetite never really went away, so I was still able to get my calories in. The unfortunate part of this is that I haven't been able to workout since Tuesday and really get a good workout in all week.

2011 Vols Signing Class Is Nice
The Vols have something to be very proud about after their 2011 signing day. Head coach Derek Dooley knows how to close. He landed the top two prospects in Tennessee and snagged defensive end/linebacker Curt Maggitt Tuesday night despite a late push from Florida. The players were buying what Dooley was and is preaching, so that is very positive sign for the future of Tennessee football.

My Journey: Day 31
I opted to sleep in today until 7:00 a.m., instead of working out at 5:00 a.m.. The extra sleep is what my body needed to shake this head cold. My throat is feeling better and it seems to be more of a sinus issue now. It's tough to say when this crap will be out of my system, but until then I probably won't be in the gym.
I'm going to take another day off from the gym tomorrow and I will hopefully shake this thing. In the past I would have normally pushed it and not taken time off from the gym, but since my wife is pregnant and expecting our first child in a few weeks, it is very important to get rid of this as soon as possible.

Another Tale In The Mitch Mustain Saga
Former Arkansas and USC quarterback Mitch Mustain was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of selling prescription drugs according to ESPN. It appears to be another turn in the downward spiral that is Mustain's life.
Mustain started a promising college playing career at Arkansas after being one of the nation's most sought after high school prospects. Then a decision to transfer to USC and warm the bench proved to be the end to his college career. He started one game at USC, a 20-16 loss to Notre Dame.
This arrest is the latest setback for Mustain as he was back at USC preparing for the upcoming NFL draft. If this doesn't put up some red flags to NFL scouts, I don't know what would.

My Journey: Day 30
Last night, my throat started to hurt. I woke up this morning and felt like garbage. I threw in a throat lozenge, made my pre-workout shake and headed to the gym anyway. I knew it was going to be a terrible workout, but I had to do it anyway. I decided to just do a few chest exercises and I opted for machines only. I did chest press, flyes and pullovers and closed it out with 30 minutes on the elliptical. It wasn't a great workout, but it was good enough to get a good sweat going.
The rest of the day was spent taking medicine and trying to get rid of this crap. The good news is that I felt better as the day progressed. I desperately need to feel better if I even want to think about getting my leg workout in tomorrow. With a good night of rest, I am thinking that I will be fine tomorrow, but we will have to wait and see about that.

Clay Matthews or Troy Polamalu? Your Pick
If you had to choose between Clay Matthews or Troy Polamalu, who would you take?
Clay Matthews is one of those rare players that has an endless motor. His ability to shred blocks and get to the quarterback is what sets him apart from other outside linebackers. The former walk-on at University of Southern California has had a lot to prove throughout college and into the NFL. It’s that hard work and determination that has made Matthews one of the best linebackers in the game today.
Troy Polamalu is a playmaker. He possesses a certain play recognition quality that makes him one of the game’s best players. Offenses study for Polamalu much like a defense would study a quarterback. Polamalu has the ability to change the game at any moment and he possesses characteristics that cannot be coached.
They are both great players, but who would you rather have on your team?
