Redskins Resign Hightower

The Washington Redskins resigned free-agent running back Tim Hightower today. The 25-year-old back is expected to compete with Roy Helu and Evan Royster for snaps this season.

Hightower started the season as the featured back in the Redskins backfield before a knee injury sidelined him for the year. In his absence, Helu and Royster proved that they were capable of filling the void, thus creating a very crowded backfield going into this season.

After a monster pre-season last year, Hightower never really got going in the regular season. He rushed for 321 yards on 84 carriers in five games last season. Thought of as a great pass blocker, Hightower can become the Redskins third-down back in the new offense. While it is still entirely too soon to tell, it appears that the Redskins may have had that in mind when resigning Hightower.
