The Manny Machado Era Begins Tonight In Baltimore

The time is now as Manny Machado is scheduled to make his major league debut tonight for the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles top pick in 2010 has been widely regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball over the past two years.

Machado, 20,  is a shortstop by trade, but he is expected to see time at third base and maybe even second base. With the injuries and inconsistent play, it is a good bet that he will spend more time at the other two positions this season than shortstop since current shortstop JJ Hardy has been playing well.

The Orioles find themselves in a serious competition for a playoff spot right now as they are in a three-way tie for a wildcard spot and 4.5 games behind the American League East leading New York Yankees.

The Orioles haven't made the playoffs since 1997, so the time is now to put the players on the field that will give Baltimore the best shot at winning. Machado is leaving AA Bowie riding a nine game hitting streak. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Week last week.
